I'm so sorry about your Mother ..You write that she has been in the nursing home for 5 months?....SURELY, by now, some doctor has told you probably what caused the stroke?....Is that why you decided to join..if you heard from someone..that she should have been on Coumadin?...If that is the case, I hope that doctor or doctors will stand up for your Mother...Good Luck..Bonnie

Moms original valve was diseased so the surgon told us right before he went in that he would use a mechanical or a tissue but he did not know untill he got in. He used a mechanical. We did not get to discuss alot with him about it, and i do not recall anything about having to take medication . The hospital was not in Midland so we were traveling back and fourth to see her,so it was hard to catch the doctors when we were there. The discharge papers have a list of scrips and follow up Dr. appts. (no coumadin) We requested home care for her,but she lived in a small town, and did not get much help. After her stroke the cardiologist asked us why she was not taking her coumadin.we told him because it was not perscribed. he said he was out of town when she was discharged so he called in the surgon. the first thing he asked was why was she not taking her coumadin? Because you did not give it to her. Then he asked why she did not come back in two days to check her blood?Because they did not tell her to do that. He said he would find out what happened. The last time my sister saw him his reply was I am only the surgon. After two weeks we got her brought to Midland to Health South Rehab for 14 days(all insurance woud pay for, then to nursing home.Have not heard from her ex cardiologist either.

Q - What do you a medical professional who insists that proper medical care was another medical professional's responsibility?

A - Co-respondent in a malpractice lawsuit.

Lotsa deep pockets in the scenario you describe.

There's a principle in healthcare called "coordination of care". It was entirely lacking in your mother's case.

What happened to your mom is beyond belief

I'm very sorry to here what happened to your mother.

Have your scrutinized the medical records for the drugs she was prescribed, look for heparin or lovenox.

When I received my cardiac records from the hospital I checked everything and that means everything, I went from day to day and accounted for everything.

This is really a horrific story - like Karlynn, I've been sitting here with my mouth open re-reading your opening post. The first thing anyone should be told about a mechanical valve is that you need to take warfarin (coumadin) for life.
I truly hope you get all the recompense owing to your mother, and that she's able to have better rehab as well.

I repeat. Take the steps that I outlined. This surgeon who says that I am only the surgeon is not fit to practice. That hospital is not fit to call itself a hospital let alone a heart hospital. If you have her discharge papers and there is no mention of Coumadin or warfarin on them, you have an ironclad case. You need to put these menaces to people's health out of business.
