Thank you for all of your pre and post surgery encouragement. I am Mike's wife, Susie, and since Mike is not so energetic right now, I will give you a few more details. I tried to let you know info along the way, but never having posted here, I guess I didn't know what I was doing. Mike had surgery at 8:00 am on Friday morning - it was supposed to be first thing Thurs, but a heart transplant for a 26 year old female moved ahead of Mike. He was out of surgery by 11:30 am and moved to intensive care at noon. My brother and I decided to run home, get a bite to eat, clean up and rest since the hospital staff said that he would not be coherent til 6pm. Well, at 2:30 pm - 3 hrs out of surgery, the phone rang, my brother answered and said "Mike!" and I said "Mike who?" We hurried back to the hospital and there the old boy was sitting up in bed, rosy cheeked and ready to get on with recovery! He was sitting up in a chair by 10pm that night and walking early the next morning. They call him the poster boy of open heart surgery. He was unhooked from everything except for oxygen a few hrs after surgery - on autopilot. His aortic valve was replaced with a bovine valve - his own looked very good, except for the leaflets were loose. Dr Verrier really hated to take his own out, but knew that this was they only way to stop the leak. Mike should now be good for 20 years or so...hopefully by then there will be miraculous new research that will allow for non invasive procedures. Thanks for all of your support. Mike has turned to all you more than friends and family, as you have the experience and feelings that he has had. Your replies and information sharing has made his experience so much less tense. Fondly, Susie Marthaller
