Michelle, I had Dr. Akins a year ago he is very experienced in what he does.My cardio recomened him as the best. He does things his own way and I was warned before hand he has a different way of doing things.I worked in many hospitals as a nurse and know that the PIA Drs. are the good ones.My cardio raves about his work.I didn't meet him untill my pre-op the day before surgery, but my cardio is at the MGH heart center. I don't know how he does it if the Dr. is an out side one..

Hi!

I had decided from looking at Mass General's website that Dr. Akins would probably be my best fit. When I called back to book him, they indicated I needed to go through a new patient process, where I send all my records, films and such down to Mass General, then an intake nurse goes over it all and calls me with a doctor recommendation. I am wondering if I should just call his office directly? I did the other day and the receptionist told me that he doesn't do second opinions.

I am interested in someone who does things they own way. That shows uniqueness and character. Could you explain what a PIA doctor is? I am not familiar with that term.

Thanks for your feedback.

Michele

I went to Mass General in an ambulance the first time and my surgery was emergent. My wonderful surgeon, Dr. Hilgenberg, took such good care of me and brought me back from the edge, so to speak.

When it became clear I needed the second OHS four years later, my cardio did not just 'assume' I would want to return to Dr. Hilgenberg and asked my preferences. There was no question in my mind but that I wished to return to Mass General if this surgery had to be and there was no surgeon I wanted more than him to do it.

My cardio knew him well and accumlated all my records, cd's of TEE and Cath etc, gave them to me to bring to my appointment. When Dr. Hilgenberg agreed to do my second surgery, I thanked him for agreeing to take care of me once again. That gracious, magnificent man turned, looked me directly in the eye and said "I wouldn't not". Yes, double negative and all that but it was music to my ears. I had such trust in his skilled hands. And, indeed, he brought me safely through once again. And barely a year later, he died. I still am pained at his loss. He was the picture of good health, trim, disciplined..... and gone so fast.

I think Dr. Akins shared an office with him and perhaps one other surgeon.
That office was beautiful with incredible view across Boston's Charles River. :)

I know he and Dr. Akins were very close. My second surgery date that was cancelled was when the funeral was...I don't remember the view, last time I was there I just wanted to get off Coumadin and go home... 6th floor Cox building?

That's creepy as when I was in step down still recoverying from my second surgery, all the cardios and heart surgeons attended the funeral of one of the chief cardiologists who died the day after my surgery. I saw them all gathering on Elison 8 and I asked my nurse what was up.

Last time I saw Dr.Hilgenberg was same thing as you. I got okay to quit coumadin.

Everyone is different no matter where you have it done. Because hers was an emergency the first time maybe there was more going on that showed up later.

Michelle,

I had my surgery at MGH almost 3 years ago. I continue to receive care at the heart center because of my hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. If I were to need another OHS, I wouldn't hesitate to have it at MGH. I never had the added stress of searching for my surgeon. My cardiologist at MGH referred me to him and I still contact his office now and then to let them know how I am doing.

I always had it in my mind that at a big hospital like MGH you are just a number. I was wrong. I think that no matter what doctor you choose there you will be impressed with. They care and it shows. My surgeon came in on a Monday holiday to make sure he discharged me. I wasn't feeling well about 10 weeks after my surgery. They did all the tests necessary to make sure it wasn't life threatening and then I received a call on a Saturday from my surgeon who was in Saudi Arabia at the time. It was never just business with him. He always asked how life in general was going. The care from the nursing staff during my recovery was just as impressive.

I work in a hospital and see first hand how care should and should not be. I can't make a recommendation on a surgeon for you as our situations are different. I can only tell you that MGH is an excellent place to choose. I wish you well.

Tara
