I am a 21 year old male who just had their aortic valve replaced and have just joined this forum. I ran a marathon and some half marathons and did a few triathlons before developing endocarditis which eventually led to my transplant. I'm about three months out of surgery and have begun running again. I want to do the Chicago marathon in October which will be exactly one year after my surgery. I also want to do some half marathons this summer. So far I'm able to run five miles without any problems.

I've read about people getting back to their previous fitness level but I was wondering if anybody has any experience with returning to such high fitness level, such as running a marathon, that quick after their surgery.

Thanks.

Hi Jasonan
Great to hear you talk about getting back into running. I am having an 'animal' aortic valve transplant
in the near future. I am 70 age, and only last year was doing 46min for 10km. I am now down to a 100m shuffle!
I have no family, or relatives, so my exercise is paramount in my 'quality of life'.
I have to see the heart surgeon in a few days, to get the details.
Your enthusiasm really pepped me up. This is my first message. I am from Sydney Australia

Hi Jasonan,
I also had endocarditis (accute) and my mitral valve got damaged and needed to be replaced. I was wondering if your doctor had found out the cause of the infection. All my cultures were negative, was treated empiricaly with Rocephine.
Please do not overdo it, we need our immune system working 110%, specially the first year.
Good luck with the marathon
PetraS.
