My Husband Had His Aorta Valve Replaced With St Jude Valve 6 Weeks Ago And It Is Still Very Loud Most Of The Time. Is This Normal And When Does It Ever Get Quieter?

The noise is not easy to adjust to, but with time he'll find it easier. A fan helps me to get to sleep. And as you both know and will appreciate more and more, this sound is the greatest sound of all!
All my best,
MrP

I know someone with a St.Jude Master series valve from 15 years ago and it has a "tic-tic" sound if you get real close. Mine is a St.Jude Regent model and it makes a low muffled "toc toc" type of sound...which initially drove me a bit crazy at night, but now it is much quieter and I actually like the reassurance that I can hear what is going on. It is louder when I am near windows or mirrors. These things seem to be a bit different with each of us.

Had mine done november 06 and its still loud.

I'd liken mine to a cheap watch when sitting in a quiet room.

Can't hear it in normal day to day situations.

Can hear it at night.

Bothered me for about 3 weeks and then i just got used to it, can fall asleep in 5 minutes if tired.....of course, if i'm restless and finding it difficult to sleep it then annoys me a little.

So i guess i wouldn't expect it to get quieter any time soon.

Valve Noise

Valve Noise

In the weeks immediately following my AVR surgery, I asked my cardiologist about the noise my St. Jude Regent makes. I can hear it in my head when it's quiet. He told me it never gets quieter and over time it would bother me less. He also told me body acoustics have a lot to do with the volume of the sounds artificial valves make.

I'll be a year post-op on March 28 and the noise my valve makes bothers me a lot less now than it did at six weeks post-op.

The valve stays loud but it just becomes noise pollution you learn to live with! I had my St. Jude aortic valve placed it 2001. My nephew Lance who is 8 now calls it the watch in my arm because you can hear it in my right upper arm. It gets really loud if I get CHF or any kind of fluid in my chest. My favoriteparty trick is to open my mouth and let everone hear it clicking when I
put the microphone from the computer in front of my mouth:D

I'm 14 months out of surgery, also St. Jude aortic, and all the docs seem surprised when I complain about the noise. I think it may be worse for aortics. I have been looking for resources for a long time, and it still kind of bothers me at night time. My best suggestion is to try relaxation therapies.

Evreyone is different. Some hear their valve at first and then they gradually do not noticie it. My valve was replaced three years ago next month. I hear mine most of the time. I can no longer sleep on my left side because of the noise.

I got mine in 1991, 16+ years ago. I cannot hear it under normal circumstances because my brain has tuned it out, but others still remark that they can hear it in a quiet room or elevator. I just tell them to let me know if it stops.

I've had mine for two years, sometimes I can hear it but the noise never bothers me.
I travelled with a friend last year and one night we were sitting looking at photos on her laptop, she said 'I can hear your watch ticking'. I said 'Um, that's not my watch!'. So I guess it is pretty loud :D

I have a tissue valve but the pounding became much softer months after the replacement.

I have read that the smaller mechanical valves can be louder than the larger ones.

And I think I also read that mitral replacements can be louder than aortic replacements. Anyone else recall--is that correct?

No Sound here

No Sound here

I can't hear my aortic valve...St. Jude Mechnical...my doc said the new ones don't tick like the older ones, but who knows. I can just feel my heart beating...no sound.

I have the two mechanical ATS valves which I have to say are quite quiet but if I really try to listen then they make quite different noises, one is a tick and one is a tock! :) The tick is easiest to hear.

i have a St. Jude Mechanical 23mm, I hear mine mostly at night. If I am on either side it can get rather loud. The only time it realy bothers me is if I wake in the middle of the night and I try to go back to sleep it can be very annoying. But then I relaxe some what and remind myself how very blessed I am to have been given this very special gift of life. It works every time!

I have a St. Jude's in the tricuspid position. I've had it since June 2002. I can still hear it, and after a recent ICD placement I (and my cardiologist) believe it got louder. But it only really bothers me when I'm having a hard time getting to sleep or when I have a migraine headache. Otherwise, I pretty much ignore it.
