I received a St. Jude mec. valve exactly 3 months ago. Feel great! Quit drinking and a 40 year smoking habit, but I have a question. It sounds like I have a Timex watch in my head at ALL times. My doctor said it was normal, and that my brain will eventually phase the ticking out.Has anyone else had this problem? Leo

People do joke about the ticking, such as in elevators. I use mine for timing things. But I don't want it ever to stop. You might say that I live with it. Welcome to our group!

My husband had two mechanicals, one of which was quite old and loud. It could be heard if you were close to him, even in a crowd. Sometimes when he was in a group of people, one would say, "what is that ticking noise, do you hear it?" and they would come over to him to see if it was him. He would always say. "What ticking noise, I don't hear anything?"

He worried a lot of people, I am afraid. They thought there was a bomb somewhere. Many thought it was his watch.

He enjoyed that. It was his little private joke.

He did get used to the sounds. But also did use a sound machine at night because the mattress just made it louder when he was trying to fall asleep.

Thanks Nancy. I have been having some fun with the ticking also. My grandson thinks it is WAY COOL ! I guess I should worry when it stops ticking Ha. Leo

Leo, when I first came home from hospital, my house had many ticking clocks....they were driving me nuts,
so I had my husband remove most of them. That helped alot, I could hear my heart without all kinds of distractions.
My Valve is a Regent model and it is very quiet, but my heart likes to thump.
It's all fine in the bigger picture of life.

Leo,

I'm almost 8 months post op and the sound drove me crazy for the longest time. I'm happy to say it will get better, you will start to notice it less. Now the only time it bothers me is if I'm having problems falling asleep....and than everything bothers me :)

I am 6 weeks post op today! One of the biggest hurdles for me as well has been the ticking. At night is the worst, because it's hard for me not to count..(?) go figure...and I have had some PVCs and one episode of A-Fib...so any little irregular beat gets my attention.

Yep, the surgery wasnt so bad....the healing wasnt all that bad...but the A-Fib (along with the anxiety of it happening again) and the ticking is the hardest to put behind me. So, we are in the same boat. Lets hope it gets better

I smile because my old mitral is rather noisy too & I love the look in ppls faces when we're in an elevator together! :p :)

At first I heard my valve all the time. Now, every so often. When I am laying in bed my cat will sometimes lay on my chest. She tilts her head because she can hear it, then falls right to sleep. lol

The ticking was a major concern to me and a very big reason why I chose Tissue Valve. I was so worried about getting a loud valve I wasn't willing to take the risk.

Hi Leo,

I have had my mechanical valve for 4 and half years. For me, the sound has never completely gone away. Sometimes I hear it and other times I do not. There does not appear to be a pattern as to when I hear it. It just happens. I have accepted it. I am better prepared to respond with humor if someone makes a comment about hearing a loud tick. Hearing the ticking also reminds me I much to be thankful for.
