Hi Guys

Years ago when I was in Fort Worth (1982?) I took part in a study designed to test the V02 max of a variety of athletes from both sprinting and distance backgrounds. We did treadmill 'maxing-out' Bruce(?) tests and a variety of others including how long we could hold our breath under water, body mass index etc. The tests were carried out I think be researchers from Dallas (Cooper Clinic?) and one of those guys who worked there was Dr Peter Snell, a NZ legend runner who won three Olympic Gold medals (Google Peter Snell... legend!). I'm trying to get back in touch with him and see if this follow up kind of research would interest him? Only trouble is I can't find an email address for the clinic - at least from here in Australia! Could be worth pusuing though...

Grant - this is exactly the kind of synergy we need. There is an effort in the U.S. to create a national registry of heart patients from which a cardiologist could extract meaningful guidance. The Cooper Clinic is well known here - I can easily see a cardiologist wanting to have access to data about athletes and their health after valve replacement. The NBA is starting to test all of the pro basketball players and found 3 in this year that required OHS. The question is how to provoke interest from the medical community and then make it easy for them to get access to data from which to draw conclusions. I think this is one of the challenges we face and can have an impact on as we live out our lives (not an issue that is easily solved or addressed). There is a more acute issue in the U.S. - OHS for heart defects became widely available in the 1970's and it's feared that infants/children operated on then are now adults and will require some monitoring for the rest of their lives and perhaps another intervention. This is a good website for understanding one group's efforts to tackle that issue - http://www.achaheart.org/index.php. Learning that made me put my health/athletic goals into perspective.

In the meantime, I think we just have to continue interacting with each other. It's good for us and it will blaze a trail for the next generation. Best regards, Mark

P.S. I think you are doing very well with your athletic goals - keep sending the status reports!
