I read an article on WEB MD that said surgery is recommended for Mitral Regurg when you have symptoms of heart failure, or when your ejection fraction drops below 60 and your left ventricle is larger tan 45 mm at rest. Which left ventricle are they speaking of . On my echos Left Ventricle is listed as Left Ventricle ESD or Lvids and Left Ventricle EDD or LVIDD. The normal adult value for LVESD OR LVIDS says 4.0, the normal value for LVEDD or LVIDD is 5.4. I want to know which is the reading for the left ventricle at rest. My guess is 45 but not sure. Aside from shortness of breath what other symptoms of heart failure are there. I would appreciate any answers to these questions. . I am presently trying to decide how to handle my mitral regurgation, as due to my accident last year it might be time to act on it.

Thank y0u for any answers

Hi, Harmony--

My cardiologist knew it was time to act when not only was I consistently short of breath (at rest and during activity), but also lightheaded and tired all the time. The symptoms happened so suddenly (though looking back, I'd been symptomatic for months) that we both knew surgery was a definite plan. My EF was 65%, but that meant nothing--my leak was severe enough that I needed the surgery as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration of my condition.

This isn't to scare you, this is only my personal experience. If possible, I'd suggest you see a surgeon and have him evaluate your echoes and any other tests to see if you are ready for surgery.

Take care,
