Oh my goodness, could we have had a MORE frustrating night last night??? I really don't think so. I've learned my lesson... Never again will I lock the front door's top lock!

Yesterday we left the house around 10:30 to spend time with Nathan's family. We had a good time and finally got to our driveway around 8 PM, completely exhausted from our day.

But the darn garage door wouldn't go up! We ALWAYS go through the garage door, never the front door. Nathan went around to the front and tried the front door, even though we were fairly certain it would be pointless. We always lock the dead bolt on the front door, since we never use it. While in the front Nathan talked to some neighbors who were standing outside. The electricity had been out since 5 o'clock! And supposedly TXU said it would be fixed around 10 PM.

So, with no way of getting into our house, we went to the library so I could grab a few books to read, then went over to Hobby Town so Nathan could play games with his friends. At 10 o'clock they started to pack up, so Nathan and I got back into our car and swung by our place. Still no power (we had figured out that we could call our house and if the answering machine were to pick up, that would mean the power would be back on, but decided to try it despite no answering machine yet). When that was unsuccessful, we went to Barnes and Nobel and browsed there until they kicked us out because they were closing. That was 11 o'clock. We went back to our house, being that we had nowhere else to go. We sat in the car just waiting. A TXU truck came by and Nathan got out to ask the workers if they had an estimate on how long it would take. They had no idea. Something about needing a new transformer...

Realizing we might not get into the house until morning, I worried about the fact that I couldn't get to my medicine. So we drove over to Walgreens, explained the situation, and I was giving one dose of all of my meds. We went back to the house and decided we'd just try to sleep in the car. By now it was midnight and Nathan was scheduled to work the next day. He set his phone alarm for 4 AM, and we leaned the seats back, cracking the windows slightly so we wouldn't suffocate. Amazingly, I did doze for about 45 minutes... Then I started getting HOT and ITCHY! I tossed and turned (as much as you can in a car) for an hour, getting more and more frustrated by the minute. Every now and then Nathan would click the garage door opener, just to check, but of course, nothing happened. I think he dozed a bit (at least, he snored some), but neither of us were getting much rest. So around 1:45, after much debate, we went to a Motel 6 nearby. We got to our room and immediately fell asleep... That is, after Nathan called in to work and let them know he wouldn't be able to come in, since he had no way of getting to his uniform or work shoes and would get VERY little sleep.

I woke around 6:50 this morning and tried calling the house... THE MACHINE PICKED UP!!! I was instantly awake and ready to go rescue the dogs (who had been home for 20+ hours without food or bathroom facilities!). But Nathan could barely moan in response, he was so tired. I tried to see if I could sleep some more, but knew it was pointless. So I told Nathan I was going to go rescue the dogs and I'd come back for him when he was ready. His reply was a grunt. I took that to mean it was fine.

When I got home the dogs were SO excited to see me. I immediately let them out and went searching for the messes that were sure to be left behind... There were NONE! At least, none that I could find. I'm absolutely amazed. I fed the dogs and considered laying down, but knew it would be impossible. I checked the clocks to see how long the power had been back on. Turns out, if we had waited 30-45 more minutes, we probably would have been able to get back in! Oh well.

Around 8:15 Nathan called wanting me to come pick him up. I did so and now here we sit, each on our computers, zombi-like in our exhaustion. I'm thinking a nap may be in order at some point today...

Oh Niki,I am sorry ,what an awful night,I can't imagine sleeping in your car in Texas. That was good you thought about your meds and walgreens helped you out.
You have so much more patience than me,I probably would have smashed a window and had don deal with it in the morning.
I AM glad you had a nice day with your family :)

how awful for you. Bet you slept like logs when you hit the pillows.

We have dead bolts, too. We always lock them and not the door knob lock, but carry keys to both just in case. I also have a hidden key for the knob lock just in case someone turns the inside button and we need to get back in - one of the little ones did that and the key was handy. I also carry an extra set of car keys in a pocket in my purse because I have made several trips to get a family member into her/his (mostly his) car and I never want that to happen to me. Used mine once, thankful to have them.

I bet others in VR have similar stories.

Our key opens all the locks in house. Unfortunately, this particular lock can ONLY be opened from the inside. It does not have a key at all. :( I'm never locking it again (if I can remember)! We've lived in this duplex for 5 years (and we're renting, so I didn't want to deal with the landlord if we broke something to get in. Nor did I want the dogs to completely freak out.) and we've never had this happen, so who would have ever anticipated it?

It might be a good idea to lock it if I'm in the neighborhood.

When I was in my 20s I was climbing thru my window once since I lost my purse and keys and actually had the cops stop.OF course since i lost my purse i didn't have ID to proof I was breaking into MY house.lol it was a "fun"night. Luckily my neighbor came out and assured the police that I did live there.

Just give me some warning, cause otherwise, the lock stays undone (that is, only the one that doesn't have outside access... The other two might stop you. ;) ). :D

I once went to my husband's grandmother's house to waste time before a meeting on her side of town. She had given me a key for exactly this purpose, as she was going to be at a doctor's appointment... Unfortunately, she also set the alarm and didn't tell me the code!

So the alarm is going off, the dog is going crazy, and I am in a panic. I tried calling her cell, but she never has it on. So I called my husband to find out his dad's phone number (it had recently changed and I hadn't put it in my phone yet). He didn't answer either... Fortunately he ended up calling me back not too long after and he told me the code (by this time the alarm had been going off for quite some time). I got the alarm off, but 5 minutes later the cops show up. I showed them my ID (which does not prove much of anything, really, since I don't live there) and explained what had happened. It might have helped that I knew the dog's name and he acted like he knew me... At any rate, they let me stay. I was worried I was going to end up hauled off to jail... ;)

It's a valuable lesson on what to do in case of power failures.
Mind you, if it was me and my dogs were stuck inside, I just know there would have been a big smashed window to fix the next day:)

Do you only have the one door. the one that you dead-bolt?No back door..the reason I ask..a few months ago, we drove down to daughter's house to pick up Granddog..she had just moved in and had no extra keys..so told me she would leave the back door open..knowing we would not be long getting there...so, we go in..spend a while, leaving my purse, car keys in house...Hubby /I decided to take the dogs out back and walk them before we left......and oops, yes, the door locked behind us. No neighbors home, ect...no cell phone. in my purse. ..so I walked out front looking for anyone (construction workers) that may would have had a ladder for top porch..Found out later, daughter keeps that one locked ..due to the kids...... but..a lady utility worker came by..got out and walked around back with me..she swore me to secret..that I never tell. whipped out her credit card..and swiped the lock..Poof, opened..:D Daughter got an extra key made and hid it outside..for the back door...Good thing..it is a very tricky door. and little ones are always locking it when they reach up to open the door..The flip lock is too close to the door knob... We were in a mess there..daughter/hubby work an hour away..plus..I don't think I have their work #'s in my car..Something I need to do one day..just depend on my cell phone..for everyones #;s...Write them all down and put in car pocket............Another good bit of advice for members with pets. Daughter has a large sticker on her front door..In Case of Emergency (fire, ect.) there are pets inside...She has the one of cats/dogs..stuck on one of her door glass panes..:) she has 2 inside cats and 1 dog.......Bonnie

We have a total of 3 doors to get into/out of the house. One is in the garage (this is the one we always use), one goes to the back yard (a sliding glass door that is always locked), and the front door (which has three locks, two of which can be opened from the outside, but all three are usually locked. Though not anymore!). I had thought about trying to do something to jimmy open the sliding glass door, but worried that if we didn't get it open it would just upset the dogs more (they'd already heard us try the front door and were going nuts).

If we hadn't been able to get in this morning, I would have found a way to break in. There's no way I would have left my dogs for any longer! I was going crazy thinking about them as it was. Fortunately, they aren't completely unfamiliar with being home alone for long periods, just not generally overnight!

Thanks for sharing all of your stories. Makes me feel not quite as dumb. ;) :D

great grands come home from school; lost their keys; they pop out a whole window. Their mother would hurt them if she knew. But we aren't telling her because she really would!

Why their Mother of the g-grands..need to have an outside key?I know NOT under the door mat..but somewhere?Son has one of those things..combination...on his back deck..Key is inside..Kameron knows the combination to un-lock it..Key inside...attached to a wall....and he knows..he had better put the key back inside.:D when he opens the door. when he forgets to take his key..:p Bonnie

Oh Niki ... my goodness mercy me ... what a night for you.

Very glad that all turned out OK ... but, that sounds like a story for the ages. In a few years, you'll probably be chuckling at it.... ;).

Yes, well it also seems that I'm as dumb as I look... After all that mess last night I not only didn't take a nap at all today, but I'm also still awake at 1:20! What in the world is wrong with me??? I'm telling you, my sleep is so totally messed up and I have no idea how I'm going to be able to get back to work in two weeks! (Yikes! It's that soon?!?)

Knowing that everything worked out OK makes this a great story, and well told. Our place is so isolated that I have given this a lot of thought. As someone else suggested, I went on the internet & purchased a locking keybox--something like the Real Estate agent might attach to the door knob of a house they are trying to sell.

You don't want that thing on the doorknob all the time, so the next thing is to find a dry hiding place. The guys who are any good at breaking into houses can commonly find the hiding place you thought would never occur to anyone. But when they do--they find a box that is more secure than the house itself. It only costs a few bucks, and resolves the problem.

As a longtime prosecutor, I would never hide an unprotected key outside.

The children are one of each!

The children had keys of their own and either leave them home or lost them. I have no idea how they figured out how to get in the window.

I leave the key outside because we don't use that lock (the knob lock) at all since there are dead bolts that need keys all over the house and when we go off, this door is locked by the deadbolt. This knob key matches none of the others. All other knob locks are locked - except this one. It's just for when someone accidentally locks the knob when we are at home and we are shut outside.

I have always heard that if someone wants to get in your house badly enough, there will be a way found.

Last weekend we attended a charity ball and decided to stay the night. After it finished we went for coffee with some friends and while out there was a power faliure, we went back to the hotel and were told our room key card would work as they are battery operated trouble was we were on the 9th floor and the only way to get there was up the stairs. Climbing 9 flights of stairs after a night out, in high heels and a week and a half before having ohs was no fun ....Mary

Oh my goodness, I would have slept in the lobby! Or made one of the hotel workers carry me up. There's no way I would have made it up that many flights of stairs. I can barely make it up one... Your story trumps mine. :D
