Hey does anyone have a LARGE bump at the top of the incision? Mine seems to be really large and swollen it is also only 2 weeks, but yuk. The doctors said it will go down. I don't remember my husband ever having this. Also the surgeon did say that the incision would start about 2 to 3 down from the collor bone minimally invasive. Well it is not it is right below the bone, he did have to do a surprise bypass, do you think this could be why?

Thanks

I was told the large bump was normal. I had it, but it went away. Didn't notice exactly when it went away, but it's gone now.

Bump

Yes, the bump thing is pretty normal. Mine eventually went away. I was less concerned about the bump at the top of my scar than I was about a couple of areas at the bottom where the skin was rippled. All of the issues disappeared.

I'm sure other members will be along to convey the same experience. All I've got now is a scar that resists tanning. I do still get some funny looks when I tease people about my surgeon failing to match my Harley Davidson Eagle tatoo when he glued the skin on my chest back together.

Yep...I had a big bump and eventually it went down and was replaced by a little ditch...dunno how or why that happened but it seems it is going to stay there as its been the same for over 1 year.

It will go away. I know I had mine when I went back to work at 8 weeks because I was self-conscious about it. However, I couldn't tell you when it disappeared.

YEP. Mine's 8 1/2 yrs old, but it's small now and nobody sees it but I can feel it and if pushed a bit, it's still tender so don't push it.

Thanks all, the docs have said it would go down, but I trust you guys more....

Goose Egg is a good way to describe it.

I called mine "my speed bump"

It was explained to me by my surgeon that he cut that bone from under the skin, so I could wear v-necks without the scar showing.

Take Care

Mine's pretty big and freaky looking but the doc did tell me that it will absolutely go away in time.
If it's still there around Easter of next year though I'm dyeing/painting it up for the Holiday :).

My surgeon said very similar to me. He said he cuts the bone higher than he cuts the skin. He tried to keep the skin incision as low as he could as I had kidded with him I would have to dispose of my low cut evening gowns. (I won't have to as it turns out. :) ) The bump at the top is the result of them trying to make the external scar the least obvious as possible.

Both my surgeries my 'bump' had shrunk hugely by about week 6 or 7. It is only slightly swollen now at week 8 and my chest incision is fully healed. It isn't red or swollen or any more obvious than it was going into the surgery. Surgeon exactly followed along line from my first OHS and I'm amazed how it has healed.

I have a big bump about three inches long and two inches across toward the bottom of my incision. The bump ends at the bottom of my incision. The doctor had it CT scanned a month ago and was told that it was just tissue and fat and it was no problem. Both my cardiologist and surgeon said the same thing. The surgeon doctor then scheduled a follow up CT in three months to see if anything had changed in connection with my normal follow up. Aside from its appearance, it is of no bother - although I wish it was not there.

Oh yeah....Mine was crazy, it when down dramatically around week 5 , I really miss "lumpy". :(

Despite having the full length sternotomy, I never developed a bump at the top of the incision, though a friend of mine still has his from his surgery two years ago, but it's much smaller now than when I first saw his scar post surgery. My scar is least apparent at the collar bone level; small keloid changes only from 1/3 of the way from the top all of the way to the bottom. This permits me to wear my shirts with the top two buttons undone without anything scar-like visible.

My wife sees these gradually disappear in time with her patients; even those whose bumps don't go away eventually learn to ignore theirs, and the skin usually is the same color as the rest, so it's not obvious unless you're looking for it.

I had "The bump" too. It went away and as others said , not sure when. I remember wondering......What is this from??? Now I know. Thank you!
