I've been laid off before too and it really sucks! But most definitely this is an event that allows you to be added to your wife's insurance without waiting for open enrollment. You might want to check out how good her insurance is first though. Being un-insured is definitely not a good idea - at least not yet (2014 should change that as you can't be denied/decline for pre-existing conditions.) Now however, if you have any gaps in coverage, then pre-existing conditions would not be covered for some period of time like 2 years or something and that could be financially ruinous.

I hope that this experience ends up being a positive one. Mine did. I make less money now, but I like where I work and the people I work with much better than my prior job.
