I only live 30 minutes from the Tallulah Gorge.I cannot remember when they release the water from the dam?..for most valver..Tallulah Falls was the largest tourist attraction in the mountains of Georgia in the early century. the railroad only went that far.Great honeymoon place..now, all the Grand hotels are gone. ....Let me know, Mike if you come the next time.Hubby loves to take pictures.Bonnie

Hey Granbonny, they release the water the first 2 weekends in April and the first 3 weekends in November. I'm up there quite a bit on those weekend. It's a great river and lots of paddlers from around the country come to paddle it. It's an absolutely beautiful gorge! I love that place! Yeah, I would love to meet y'all. I will let you know when I'm headed that way. Actually, I pass Tallulah on my way to Clayton to paddle the Chattoga River all the time.

Yeah, life isn't over after OHS. It's only begun. I think you are twice as motivated after OHS than before.

Mike, that explains why the parking lot is always so full when we go up to Pigeon Forge for our Anniversary in November. We pass right by the Gorge on our way up. Maybe this year we will stop and look around. We will be going up November 4th.

Hey Sue, you should stop and look around it's a great place. The park service has built overlooks and a swinging bridge over the gorge. There is a rim trail you can hike around as well. And if your feeling up to it. You can hike down into the gorge. It's very steep. The Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretative Center ( visitor center) just past the road bridge (HWY. 441) on the right. You can get some awesome views from there as well. Here is some info.

Okay first of all I will stop calling what I do kayaking if that is what is called kayaking. I just paddle around in the ocean or harbors and back bays around the Calif. Coast.

Second I am going to possibly move to the Knoxville area and would love to get involved in more kayaking. I am going to visit in Oct. so I will go by this area just to check it out.

Way to go man. I am so impressed. As Fred Flintstone used to say Yabadabadoo.

My brother in law white waters in TN, and we have a small event North of us in the Spring that draws a few thousand spectators.
I think I need to give this a try!

Old 441 was the route from up North to Florida...I have lived in this area for 40 years..(Only here for 8 years) but before about 30 miles away on our Farm..So, I have seen many changes. the Interstate from Gainesville, Ga. connects to 441.and old 441 was just a 2 lane road. the Great Wallandi (sP?) walked a tightrope over it..We saw him..so, when you are approaching Tallulah Falls..slow down and you will see a sign pointing to veer off for Old 441. it will take you by where he walked.and great views of the gorge.then you come back up on the 4 lane highway. Maybe a mile?..When you cross the bridge..on your left is a picnic area.We had many Cub Scout, Little League , ect. there when my kids were growing up.Swimming area for them on the lake...Now, they are building the 4 lane all the way into Clayton..Not the same...Tourist just fly by all the sights.. There are many motels, ect. in Clayton, Ga. a few miles away. used to be a sleepy little town.)We bought 39 acres there many years ago..but told my Hubby to sell it about 15 years ago.No way I wanted to live in that remote part of Ga. Kick myself now. Lake Burton is about 5 miles from Clayton..and lots go for $100,000.Beautiful lake..Green and cool water and great fishing.One more tidbit. Deliverance. the movie with Burt Reynolds was filmed there..Above Clayton going towards S.C. is that where you go? Mike?to put in?I remember that spot on the Bridge where people put in..has a marker saying Ga./S.C./N.C...border.....Bonnie

Mike, as Karlynn said you make a great poster boy for the active lifestyle possible for valvers on coumadin/warfarin! The pics are grreat! I also really apreciate your post explaining your qualifications for doing these sort of runs. Having the knowledge and experience is what gives these activities their real value. I'm a "recreational" kayaker, but would love to take some white water classes if I ever have the time. Next on my list is learning to roll! Keep us posted with paddle/run reports and pics! Great shots... It looks like some extreme fun!

Hey I worked in Cleveland, TN for 3 yrs. It was only 20 min from the Occee River. This was the selected run for 1996 rafting Olympics when Atlanta hosted.

We had several people from the office that also grewup there and were registered river guides.

Have you been down the upper section??

A dear old friend of mine used to guide on the Ocoee. Tim Dukes...
Not sure about now - but he did for years.
We rafted the Ocoee once - scared me to death - but fun as well.

These pics are beautiful!! I live in Tennessee - the natural beauty is one of my FAVORITE qualities.
