I just had some crowns re-done tonight and there's a fair amount of bleeding from the gums where the work was done. It's been about 30 mins since I left the dentist and I've been biting gauze. It's slowed a little bit. My question is this; I took my 2000 Mgs of amoxicillin 1 hr prior to my appointment, should I take some more tomorrow morning to help prevent any infection. My dentist didn't think I needed more, but I wanted your guys opinions. I'm just worried about endocarditis.

Thanks,
Marc

The latest general recommendation is 2g Amoxycillin 1 hour before a dental cleaning or procedure. Suggest you check with your Dr if you think the bleeding was so far out of the ordinary that perhaps something more is needed.

I've been using clindamycin for dental procedures as I do not tolerate the massive doses of amoxicillin. With the clindamycin I take 600 mg 1 hour prior to the procedure. They (cardio and dentist) have never had me taking a second dose the following day. Maybe years ago, if there was evidence of infection, they had me on a week or so of oral antibiotics, but not for a routine procedure with no active infection noted.

I have had two molars extracted since I've been on coumadin and I've never taken more than the recommended first dose of amoxicillin. Bleeding has been minimal after the extractions. Like mentioned in a post before mine, if you think that you are bleeding more than you should, give your dentist a call.

Take care!

Thanks for the input guys and gals. It took about 90 mins for the bleeding to finally stop and now the area is just very sore. I'm keeping an eye on it to make sure no infection sets in. I'll be glad when this is all done.
