cort and medtronic,
when i think of you all having had surgery at such young "baby" ages, i should be doubly grateful that joey got away with waiting till he was 49!!!
loving my kids as i do, i think i would have been a wreck in your mother's place!!
i get goosebumps thinking about it.
how lucky we are, though, that there is this lifesaving surgery!!!
glad you're around to brag about this!!
stay well, sylvia

Sylvia,

I *know* my parents were a wreck...LOL. But, we all made it through each one just fine.......for the most part, anyway ;).

Lifesaving surgery is grand....let the bragging continue!

So Cort and LeoLilac

So Cort and LeoLilac

Why so many? I'm always curious as to why someone would have so many surgeries. I had 4 but that is 4 in twenty years. Why so many for you? I hope you have seen your last. Peggy

Peggy,

In my case, each surgery meant a valve change....

'73 (birth year) ... believe this time they just patched the heart...

'77 pig's valve installed

'87 replace existing pig's valve

'03 replace existing pig's valve

future? most likely will need to replace it again, as valve life is 10-20 years..... (sounds like I'm talking about prison...LOL!!!!!!!)

HTH....

Mother Hen, the worry-wart...why didn't you have a mech. valve this last time..Then you would have been through..   :confused:Bonnie

LOL....Bonnie, the mother-hen ;).

Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for you... All I know is that the mechanical valve was not given to me as an option. They were originally going to go with a human valve, but opted for another pig's valve...not sure why...spose I should ask...LOL.

your not the only one

your not the only one

I had two open hearts before age 5 and was said to have been the first peds pt put on the heart lung. By the then second ranked cardio thorasic suergeon in the world, Dr. Johann Ehrenhaft. The surgery was so unique I have yet found anyone that had it and lived to talk about it.
