Last April 23d, Jennie was at St. Mary's hospital getting her aortic valve replaced with a SynerGraft aortic homograft. I haven't seen her posting for a while, so I'm going to call her and make sure she is OK. I remember visiting her in the hospital after her surgery, and thinking how calm and brave this young woman was after such an ordeal. Jennie was a real example for me, and an inspiration as I faced my own surgery.

Please help me congratulate Jennie on her one-year anniversary!

Wishing you many many more wonderful anniversaries,

--John

Thanks for the reminder John.

Happy Anniversary Dolphin Lady! If it weren't for John, you might have escaped this. Too bad, he ratted you out and now your all mine. :D

It's great to have you around and even better to have had the last year to talk with you. Congratulations and here is to many more years ahead.

Happy Anniversary Jennie!

We heard from Jennie a couple of weeks ago and she was planning to be in Rochester, MN for Easter weekend and through the end of this week. She was scheduled for her first year check-up with Dr. Zehr on this past Monday and also was going to be seeing another cardio as well. Jennie was worried since she left home with a bad cold and knew she was going to be required to do a treadmill test.

She promised to email us when she returned.

Hi Jen,

Wishing you the best on the first anniversary of a major event in your life. Hope and trust all is well with you.

Miss your input even if it would be just a hello. Here's lookin at you kid.:)

thanks!!

Hello my friends!

Thank you for remembering my little anniversary here, and for all your well wishes! John, thanks for your message on my machine, too. I got home very early this morning from Minnesota, and it was so nice to hear that someone had remembered! I couldn't have made it through this past year or two without all of you here. I really appreciate all your support and friendships.

How did I celebrate? I fell off a horse! Or, well, it was a mutual parting - he bucked me off and I sort of dived off at the same time. He got spooked by another horse, and started galloping, and things were getting out of control, and I figured I'd rather jump off while I had my wits about me than be bounced off and under him and get stepped on!! I tell you, that mid-west farm life is bad for my health!

But the real celebration was the next day, when I had my sternal wires removed. They were noticable, and I wasn't sure whether it was something to bother with or not, but I've been thinking about it for a while, and the doc noticed it before I even said anything, and seemed to think it was a good move, so I went for it. They also cleaned up some of my scar, so hopefully it will be nicer. It was an outpatient thing, twelve hours total, nothing in comparison to last year's surgery. Pain is fairly minimal, I'm just doing some Tylenol with a Tylenol/codeine at night. I have been getting a little emotional here and there, mainly when looking at my incision (6 cm long, over the top part of the old incision). I guess I was feeling all positive and healed, with the past year behind me, and now, it's sort of like a step back. I'm questioning myself a bit as to whether I should have had it done, but I know the question wouldn't have gone away. A nurse told me that wires sticking out like that (meaning I could feel them through my skin) are prone to infection, and a sternal infection is a big bad thing. I know in time I will feel better about my decision. Part of it is, duh, I was thinking they'd just numb me up a bit in the office and take a pair of pliers to them. I wasn't quite prepared to be retracing the same "surgery" path as last year.

Otherwise, my one-year checkup went pretty well. I had all the tests, including the treadmill and holter monitor. Things look pretty good. My mitral valve isn't all that it should be, but I'm not going to let that worry me. My response (antigens) to the SynerGraft valve has been very good at the one- and three-month points, and though I haven't seen this week's results yet, I suspect they are good as well. I should receive a copy of all my test results in a couple weeks, so I'm very curious to see how they compare with previous tests.

Anyway, that's the scoop. All in all it was a good visit...!! Thanks again for all your well wishes!! You guys are the best!

Jennie

Sounds like you are doing very well - riding a horse! Sounds like fun; well, til the horse gets spooked.

Don't feel too bad about your wires. At least they are out now. Nicole (ILoveNY) had to be admitted to get hers out. Don't second guess yourself. At least now you don't have to worry about the wires anymore and that's a good thing. Those of us who still have them, often discuss their presence in our bodies and wonder about them.

Happy anniversary!

Happy anniversary Jen!;)

Heck, what's a little wire removal after taming wild horses!!!:D

You're doing great. Keep it up!

I'll be having my second anniversary soon and wish I was doing as well as you. I am slowly getting back in shape after last year's setbacks, though, and am continually inspired by you and John and everyone else here.

Hi Jen and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! So glad you're ok and everything is well after "PARTING OF WAYS" with your horse.

May you have many many more healthy anniversaries----minus the falls.

Evelyn

Thanks everyone! I just needed a little reassuring here. Today I felt pretty good, and the incision is looking really much nicer, and I'm feeling "more glad" that I got this done. I think I'll really be happy with my upgraded scar! I was doing a little second-guessing, but I've stopped now (thanks Ann)!

The horse: Yes, I am a city-type. The biggest animals we get are sewer rats! Afterwards, the owner said "yeah, he tries to do this to everyone....!"??? I'm just glad I didn't get a big hoof mark in the middle of my chest; I would have a hard time explaining that to the surgeon! (Uh, yeah, could you tape up my ribs and reinflate my pancreas while you're in there?)

Steve, I just continue to pray for you. My little heart goes out to you. Honestly, I've only been feeling good for about a month now, after starting some (rather wimpy) weight training, and backing off on the Altace and Happy Pills. I hope you'll be pumped up and back to "normal" soon too....

Anyway, Boston Cream Pie for everyone, on the house!

-Jennie

Hey Jennie,
Be careful what you offer, since Boston Cream Pie is my favorite! Glad to hear you are happier about your "new" scar. The horse episode is a little scary. I had horses in my teens, and got the ejection seat treatment more than once

Keep up the weight training. You've already discovered one of the side benefits, i.e., it makes you feel good!

Glad things sound good for you :)

Your SynerGraft science project partner,

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Hi Jennie,
Sounds like you are doing great, I didn't realize your wires were bothering you. Mine irritate me occasionally as well, I'll have to see what the good doctor says about it. I thought about you the other day when I was making my appt for my 1 year. Let us know what you find when they get back to you.
I'll be in sunny Rochester May23 for mine, I'm kind of looking forward to it actually.

Take care,

Brooks

Come to think of it, although my scar has healed exceptionally well almost everywhere, there's one little spot that still gets sore. I've never thought much about it, but could it be wire irritation under the surface?

Hi Jennie

Hi Jennie

Glad to hear you are doing well after one year...See, you Synergraft Valvers can ride horses and us Coumadin Valvers would be afraid of being thrown and getting a head injury..I miss riding. I raised horses for 25 years..(Arabians) Been up and over the head many times.:p :p :p Hope you have many good years ahead..:) :) :) :) Bonnie

Jean

You've had quite an eventful year, I'm a city girl too, I've never been on a horse, and no desire to either. You must have been feeling pretty good to attempt a horse back ride.

The wires are a bother, but the nurse is right, infection could be a lot worst. you will heal again, it's not the same as the sterum being cracked open, but still a bit scarey.

SOOO happy anniversary, and continued good health,

Terry40
