dad is doing ok. moving to the step down floor tonight. his inr is 1.1 and they started coumdin today. i am nervous for clots but family and docs say he will be fine. i am scared.

hi back at my folks home. dad is on the step down floor . we left at 9. i do not like leaving him. mom is exhausted. 2moro he will walk. the inr stuff is still freaking me out but everyone is telling me its ok. i pray no clots thats what worries me but i also think he will be ok.

He's doing very well, and sounds right on target.
Get you some rest, gal, you're going to need your energy when you get your dad home soon. He is going to be fine.

Bob is right. Now is the time for you and your Mom to get as much rest as you can before you take your Dad home. He sounds like he is doing well and is in good hands.

hey guys - well I slept all night without waking up, so did mom. WOW. When we left dad last night he was in his new private room, I was scared to leve him but we did. I called the nurse this morning at 5am and she said he slept and had some pain meds twice over night. GOOD. It seems he might be trying ti hold off on the pain meds but we are telling him he MUST take the them to have strenght to walk and do his coughing, just little remnders he will listen to us. He is going ot be ok. ROss, you were right. Everyone was right, things are going to be ok, its a long road of recovery and I know there will be ups and downs but I know he will be ok. I cant wait to get up to the hospital to see him but my mom needs to take her time home this morning as she feels like she is getting run down I can tell...ITs all good, I am here to help them both and tomorrow night my husband comes back and he is sleeping with us for the weekend. I will update more later today from, my cell, my cell bill is going to be huge from going online LOL but i had to tell you guys all the updates, my family keeps asking me who are you chatting with online I said my Valve board friends, they thinking I am obsessive but you all have been my support. Tell him not hold off on the pain meds!!!!! If he lets it go too far, it will get out of control and then he'll be very upset with pain. Let them do their jobs and keep it under control, which means asking for the meds before they are needed.
Don't freak about the INR stuff. We can help with that once he's out of the hospital. You need to get him and mom to join and be open to the possibility that his INR management most likely don't know what their doing. Very few of them do. We can talk about that later when the time comes.

Yes - you are exactly right on the pain meds. He needs to take them so he can walk and move around. It's so important to do that. His nurses and doctors won't let the meds get out of hand. If they make him feel yucky - then suggest they try a new pain med.
I second and third what's been said about the pain meds. I am not usually inclined to take such, but was warned before my OHS to take them BEFORE the pain set in. So everytime the nurses offered the percocet, I took them, and I was a happy camper. 
Pain was not really an issue.

hi again. percs are making dad dizzy and oozie so going to try tylenol with codeine maybe. yes we r totally on his case about taking his pain meds. all tubes are out except the wires to the heart and the iv thingy. he said he is more sore than pain today except when coughs and laughs!
On day 3 my friend was Tylenol....no more strong stuff since I was nauseated from it.
The codeine worked on me at day 4,but they may be fine for him now,or
they could give him a lower dose of percocet.Glad to hear he is doing well.

hi everyone - i didnt get to see the surgeon today when he came in tonight, i was not in the room but my mom and dad saw him - he visisits twice a day at least. he said my dad is going to feel so much better with this new valve, he said he put a nice big one in theri for him. it was still hard to leve him tonight, i didnt want to leve at all, dont like it at all, but again i am thankful for his recovery and still appreciate the prayers from you all, it helps knwoing people are praying. he is walking now and getting up, all tubes are gone except a IV and the wires to his heart. He did have a temp tonight of 99.6, i was so nervous about that but he is also on some antiobotics drip, well he was last night for precaustions...is the temp something wo be too concerned with? also...his hands are cold...and when they check his blood oxyden with that finger thingy it takes some time to get it to 90-91. he is doing all his breathing excersises and walking, he did two lasps today, one time he was walking too fast. LOL...i am thankful but still a little bervous, thats just me. now i have to take care of my mom, she is so tired. love you all!

It sounds as if your dad is doing very well. Running a temp for a few days after this surgery does happen frequently, and they are taking reasonable actions to address it.
His hands are cold now because his oxygen is a little low and because his BP is probably a little low and because his circulation is in the recovery phase.
All of this will correct itself the more active he gets. Working on the spirometer is one of the best things he can do to improve the oxygen level and walking is a great help.
What you are witnessing is just ordinary stuff for someone who has undergone a difficult thoracic surgery.
It all sounds normal to me. And it will improve over 6-8 weeks of the initial recovery period.
I know your mom is probably exhausted. Please tell her for me that when your dad gets home, she will be called upon to help him out a lot during the first week or so, day and night. She needs to make sure she gets her rest now, and when he comes home, she should sleep when he sleeps even if it is during the day, and should not have too much company like neighbors or other relatives beyond you and your husband unless they are there to work and help her out. And the housework can wait until things settle down more.
All in good time. It is a slow and steady recovery.
