In regards of dosing, is it unheard of to do the following.....
6mg - 5mg - 6mg - 5mg - 5mg - 6mg - 5mg ?

Just wondering.
Thanks for the input.

Would the above dosing be considered as a regular dosing method?

Yes it's Thursday...but never mind that - I thought this was a simple question :eek:

your schedule is one way to take 38mgs per week, by taking 6mg/3days and 5mg/4days and there is nothing wrong with such a schedule.

That's too complicated for an old man like me:eek:. I would take 37.5mgs per week, 5mg/6days and 7.5mg/1day. I doubt that the loss of .5mg/wk would make much of an INR difference for me and I could do this schedule using only 5mg tablets...:D

From 35mg a week to 38mg just might be what I have to do to get over this hump.
Guess it won't hurt to try.

Thanks Dick and Bina for sharing your knowledge with this dumb bunny.

That is not at all unusual. It is common to alternate dosage amounts in order to reach a weekly total but not have any single day very much higher or lower than all other days.

I take a varied dosage of a medication other than coumadin and doctor has ordered the alternating dose so that I take a little higher dose on four days than on the other three days each week.

With 5 and 6 mg tablets you can adjust your dosing anywhere from 35 to 42 mg/ Week taking only ONE tablet per day simply by varying the daily allocation. This is a good way to minimize cost and have the ability to change your weekly dose as needed to maintain your INR in range.

Making the allocations symmetrical maintains a smooth average level and can be done easily with a 7 day Pill Box as follows:

5.5.5.5.5.5.5 = 35 mg/week
5.5.5.6.5.5.5 = 36
5.6.5.5.5.6.5 = 37
5.6.5.6.5.6.5 = 38
6.5.6.5.6.5.6 = 39
6.5.6.6.6.5.6 = 40
6.6.6.5.6.6.6 = 41
6.6.6.6.6.6.6 = 42

Well that didn't work - today, monitor reads 2.2. Lab will probably come back around 1.9

So now I'm going try ......going by Al's chart.......maybe 40mg a week? - was on 38mg/wk. Or should I go to 41mg????
ahhhh, decisions, decisions

Any other suggestions out there?

38 if that is 10% over what you were taking previously and you were still too low. To find percent, take 38 X .10= 3.8 or 4 rounded off, so if you increase 38 by 10% your adding 38 + 4= 42

Ross, I believe the above dosage change was a 5% increase. As I was only taking 5mg/wk = 35mg the previous week

I thought of increasing it again by 5% - you thinking this is not a good idea and 10% increase is better?

I guess I will never understand taking a variety of doses. I take 4.5mg every day and my INR in sticking at 2.6 and 2.7 on two week checkups.

Bina, that's how I was thinking.
So increase to 40mg/wk or 41mg?

I'm planing on using Al's little guide here:

5.5.5.5.5.5.5 = 35 mg/week
5.5.5.6.5.5.5 = 36
5.6.5.5.5.6.5 = 37
5.6.5.6.5.6.5 = 38
6.5.6.5.6.5.6 = 39
6.5.6.6.6.5.6 = 40
6.6.6.5.6.6.6 = 41
6.6.6.6.6.6.6 = 42

With no kitchen, I've been doing a lot more stairs since our secondary kitchen is in the basement. So the exercise has increased a tad.
Guess I'll try 40mg for this week and test again next Thursday. This coming week shouldn't be as crazy.

I'll let you have my CHF, COPD, and Emphysema. That'll slow your butt down and stabilize you. You'll look at those stairs and say, "Forget it".
