Is Coumadin use 'common' with tissue valves?

My Dad's AVR surgery is coming up on 28th May in Oxford UK. We've gone with Tissue (Edwards) for a variety of reasons, but I was wondering if many people have a need for Coudamin/Wharfarin with tissue valves? Dad has no other heart problems pre-op. Might we expect to use Coudamin, and if so, in what dosage?

Kind regards

In the U.S., alot of us with tissue valves are put on coumadin for a short course following surgery. My surgeon put me on it for three months. I now have no need for it. However, there are some rhythm issues, such as A-fib, that can arise that would require your father to go on it. As far as dosage goes, there is no way to know how much your father may require to get him in a theraputic range. Everyone's body responds to it differently and there are many different factors that can effect it.

Good luck to your Dad.

I have Edwards tissue valve and my surgeon put me on coumadin for three months. In the end, he let me stop at about 2.5 months. It is quite common for tissue valvers to have that short course of warfain/coumadin while the heart heals.

One of the reasons (though not the only) I chose tissue valve was to hopefully avoid lifelong ACT. I obviously am aware I could end up on it anyway but my surgeon and cardio agreed a bovine valve was a reasonable choice for me.

So far, so good. :)

Best wishes to your Dad.

Sotalol is known to be effective at Preventing A-Fib but it offers NO PROTECTION from Blood Clots / Clotting IF A-Fib is present.

DH is on Coumadin for 3 months.

He had A-Fib pre and post-op - fingers crossed that his heart settles into a normal rhythm.

If the A-Fib is still evident at our next visit, they're going to try shocking him once more.

I had a Edwards bovine valve implanted, and no coumadin has ever been prescribed.
