This is our beach cottage in Cherry Grove on Fire Island.

When we learned Thursday evening that officials would likely order a mandatory evacuation not only of Fire Island, but also the southern shore of Long Island, we decided to close the house and drive back to Philadelphia. All we can do now it to hope that Irene doesn't do too much damage to Fire Island and Long Island. Dan, Bradley, Loki and I are safely ensconced in our Philadelphia town house, and we should be all right here with no flooding where we are on high ground. If the power goes out or if we lose fresh water we'll have to deal with that.

All of those who will be affected by this storm are in our thoughts.

We got tropical storm winds and rains all night here in coastal South Carolina, but we just got the outer bands. Appears to be no severe damage. Outer Banks of NC is taking a battering now, as that area often does. Then Norfolk, and Delmarva, the Jersey Shore, NYC, New England -- I pray the storm will break up or move out to sea, or anyway not be as bad as is being forecast. Glad you and yours are in a safe place, Jim.

Glad you moved out, Jim. No use messing with Irene.
Here we have a heavy rain and wind warning starting overnight and continuing on sunday.
We are low on supplies so that doesn't help much.
Stay safe :)

I don't know how many remember Phyllis, whose husband Dick had valve replacement about 7 years ago, but we still correspond weekly, sometimes more. Their house in New London, CT, is smack dab on Long Island Sound and protected by a seawall. I questioned whether they should evacuate, and Phyllis replied that they've never had water higher than a foot on the seawall, so they were confident that they were secure. If not, they'd go to their niece's place in New London.
I just opened an email, sent at 5 am from her ipad. No power, the water halfway up the seawall, but their boat, secured with two anchors, is still there. I'm waiting to hear how they fare, and I'll pass the word.
Jim, I'm glad to hear that you are safe in Philadelphia.

Mary, thanks for the update on Phyllis. We miss her. We're still waiting to hear about the status of our beach house on Fire Island.

Jim

Phyllis sent a message this morning. Dick's boat slipped its mooring and floated downstream, but it landed in a secure cove and it will be retrieved today. They were without power until this morning, but they were able to power up their generator last night to help with the refrigerator and its contents.
All in all, I think they fared very well. Jim, I hope the beach house has done as well.

Our house "Liberty Bell post Irene.

Glad that Dick & Phyllis's boat is OK. We're back in Cherry Grove. The beach house is fine, just no land line phone service. The community has minimal damage thanks largely to our massive, well-established dune system. Our house in Philadelphia also had no damage even though we Philadelphia has a lot of flooding. Whew! That was scary.

We got smashed by Irene where we live in New Jerseyl. Our subsstation was under 5 feet of water and we got power back this morning after 75 hours. Luckily the weather was nice post-Irene and our basement did not get flooded. Some of my neighbors were not so lucky and had a lot of cleaning up to do. Unfortunately, I could not really help them out due to my recent AVR - or sould I have said "Fortunately" :)
Irene is gone, but I hear Katia will be here soon. Got to run out and get a generator. Ciao.
