When my cardiologist measured my heart rate, he found that is was normal. However, with the amount of aortic insufficiency due to regurgitation, I should have a hyperdynamic LV function. This means that at one point my heart rate was increased but has slowed down due to my heart weakening.
He noted that the average person/doctor might have just assumed that an average heart rate means no problem.
Something to keep in mind...

Heart rate can be a very misleading indicator. In my case, mine stayed in a "normal" range pre-op, 65-70 bpm, even while I developed some significant left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and pre-hypertension blood pressure levels.
Two years post-op the LVH had reversed itself and my resting HR has dropped to the low 40's with my BP 122/70 last time I got checked. I'm pretty active, but certainly not in the category of a Lance Armstrong where I can say that I achieved the low HR through exercise alone. More just a by-product of genetics and a well-functioning mech valve than anything else.
