Hello all--
I just wanted to share the good news of our yearly cardio visit today. For the first time ever none of the heart dimensions has increased--even though Matt has grown two inches and gained twenty pounds! If his LV and aorta dimensions had continued to rise at the rate they had been, we would have been at surgery level fairly soon, but they are exactly the same as they were last year
. I admit I was quietly preparing myself for the possibility of surgery sooner rather than later, but now I'm daring to hope that even though the regurgitation is mod/severe Matt could possibly hold out until the typical thirty or above age range for a BAV requiring surgery.
The cardio informed me (something I knew two years ago thanks to this site)that the Ross won't be an option because his pulmonary valve and aorta is made of the same funky tissue as his BAV, and that when the time comes we will have to go mechanical. I know I sound optimistic, but when the time comes, even if it is sooner than I'd like, I feel prepared--and I think that Matt, even though the whole thing seems like no big deal to him at this point, will feel prepared too. So many thanks to all of you for helping to educate me! I'll keep you all posted, but had to share my good news--he'll at least make it through his senior year in HS and probably well beyond before he has to have OHS. Thanks for being there!
