People who do not take warfarin also have GI bleeds, so it may not be related to warfarin. It's just that when you get one started, the warfarin makes it worse.

1. Stroke
2.Bleed
3.Another surgery
I have had two strokes and two valve surgery don't wish to have either. Grandmother had a stroke when she was 20 yrs old and couldn't move the right side of her body for rest of her life. So far my strokes have effected my memory and vision. If I couldn't talk or move and had to depend on someone to take care of me 24/7. I rather die first. I wouldn't want be a burden on my family.I had an angel watching over me a couple months ago when my INR was 14.8 and fell on the deck. I hit my ankle and it is still not healed but if it had been any other part of my body , I wouldn't be writing this letter. After going to three Dr's about my ankle and they all did very little.

stroke!

stroke!

A stroke is easily my biggest worry - the risk of heavy bleeding is there if you have an accident whether on warfarin or not, and I hope that my titanium valve will not be bothered by a little medication. No, a stroke is the thing I really want to avoid.

warfarin is stopped

Hi everyone I am scheduled to go to Boston for open heart surgery, I am a nervous wreck about this. My surgeon told me to stop taking warfarin for I am being operated on this Wednesday. I am petrified of having a stroke , never mind this operation...what do I do? Thanks Jenny

Jenny, I know how nerve wracking it is waiting for surgery and stopping your Coumadin. What you can be sure of it that you are probably in the best of hands. What hospital in Boston are you going to, and who is your surgeon?

The only thing you can do is be aware of the signs and symptoms of stroke so should that occur you can seek treatment immediately. Are you being admitted a few days early prior to surgery? Does your doctor have you on Lovenox for now?

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like as most of the people on this board have been where you are and we can talk you through these tough days.
