I was always told that chewing ice was a sign of sexual frustration. (please Mr. Moderator, don't censor me :) It is the truth, I'm not making it up).

Seriously, chewing ice cubes can crack your teeth. Not a great experience for those of us on Coumadin.
   and dont google it either, gads you wont beleive what it pulled up!!!

I don't know Tom?? With my wife and I and our funny work schedules, there ought to be a ICE TRUCK parked out in front of my house!! :D

Thankyou Geebee, did you ever wonder why you crave it?
Ive had many surgeries throughout my life..tonsils, tubal, etc..and never did this. I am attempting to see if there is a correlation. Thankyou for yor response's, love the pup

I am just not sure it means anything other than bringing back an extremely comforting and satisfying moment. Don't yell at me Ross but I have to say the moment with the ice and ginger ale after the breathing tube came out may have been better than sex (I was with my ex-husband at the time :D :D ;) ).

I would be interested in finding out if the cravings indicate some type of deficiency but I think it is just plain "old feelin good."

I really craved ice post op. I would rather ice than food. For some reason, people who are anemic crave ice. I know when ever I have had a low blood count, I just couldn't get enough ice. It would be interesting to know how many of you are anemia.

Thankyou all who have replied, I have been wondering about this for a long time. :)

I love the funnin but here's a serious note.

When pregnant, I craved the frost from the freezer and ate it as often as I could. They used to say there was something it was trying to satisfy whatever was ailing. I was very anemic then. Anemia might be something to consider.

Pretty close #'s there, I will leave it for a day or so more, Thankyou everyone, I beleive I will have my iron checked. :)

Has anyone else heard this - my GP told me that chewing on ice cubes or drinking ice-slush drinks can help slow down palpitations.

I don't know about drinking cold stuff but I have found that putting ice on my wrists (or running very cold water over them) can stop atrial flutter so I would believe your GP might be correct.

Me too

Me too

Back in 1975 I needed to have a hysterectomy, had to have 5 units of blood before the surgeon would operate. I was CONSTANTLY eating ice, even when I was making sores on the tissues in my mouth, just couldn't stop the compulsion, always took some in the car with me. After the surgery the craving stopped immediately! My hematocrit was half of what it should have been!

Well, I've been at it again for a couple of years now and while in the Cleveland Clinic for my mitral repair they said I am anemic. I kept telling those who filled my pitcher to forget the water, just bring it full of ice!! (They have the cutest tiny ice cubes, easy to crunch on.)

So I was amazed when I got home from the hospital to see this thread about ice. I will have to get checked for possible sources of the anemia. One of the docs asked me if I had ever had a colonoscopy; I've had several through the years but the last one wasn't an optimum prep., probably need to check that out after recovery.

I am always amazed when a question like the one that started this thread generates so many responses from so many who have the same situation but never thought very much about it til somebody else mentions it. Who'da thot?

I suppose our consensus, then, is that craving ice is caused by two things:

sexual frustration and anemia? :D  :p

Think maybe one causes the other and thus the need for the crushed ice??  ;)

no, no, yaps...

no, no, yaps...

Please don't remove this. I'm sitting here, waiting room for surgery, slurping on a Starbucks iced mocha -- would never consider chewing ice as it makes my teeth hurt. BUT! I did happen into this thread anyway, for fun, and reading the comment about crushed ice calming palpitations and cold applied to the wrists calming atrial flutter is VERY IMPORTANT TO ME! Let's leave this up awhile and maybe someone else will be relieved!

I just threw an 18th birthday/going away to college bash for my daughter with 60 teenagers. I was in massive palpitations due to the stress (I don't really like parties -- and I tend to be a perfectionist) and didn't want to take the Atenolol too early, but rather relax with it. I wish I had read this before! I really am excited to try these remedies!! I'm so sick of any little bit of stress starting me off.

So thank you....... a fun thread anyway......... and let's wait and see about the crushed ice for me............whenever my lucky day is!!

I see a very large cup of fresh ice chips with your name on it waiting for you!

I kid you not, it will be the most welcome thing to you at that moment. ;)

Maybe that cold operating room, being in the hands of others.. a comfortable feeling? Morphine induced addiction?? :D

Im so glad that you guys understand!! I am such a HUGE ICE-CHEWER!! I love crushed ice all the time! And while in the hospitals, i eat it even more! But while going through college, my friends always laughed cause i ate so much ice. During lunch, i would rather sit and have ice for my desert!

Anyways i'm glad someone put this out for a poll... im glad to know im not alone!!.......
