I started out on 5mgs then bumped to 7.5, About a month ago it was upped again 10mg 3 days a week at 7.5 the rest, 1st test came in at 2.8 and this last week it came back at as 2.0. I sure hope the roller coaster stops soon!

I do have a question, can pain cause your INR to drop?

Have a great weekend.

Until about 5 months ago I was taking 5mg and had been for the last 6 years. Now I'm down to 3mg and an up and down INR. So, who knows what it will be like next check up? We'll see, we'll see.:) :)

I guess I'm the little guy here - taking 3mg 6 days 2 mg 1 day per week but INR running low lately. I get the feeling as I increase some foods and vitamins I'll be needing more warfarin to stay in range.

I take 4 days of 10mg and 3 days of 7.5mg my Pt-INR has been 2.8 this summer because of all the great veggies out there that I can't resist, I perfer it at 3.0

I've only been on Coumadin for less than 2 weeks. Right now I'm on 5mg daily. My first test after release from the hospital was 2.7. My next one was 3.0. I have another check this afternoon.

fyi- i take 7.5 mg everyday which lately seems to keep me on the high side of the 2.5-3.5 range

My first patient today was a man who probably weighs about 135 lbs - he takes 7.5 mg/day. The second one was a woman who weighs about 300 lbs and she takes 2 mg/day. They were both in range. Forgetaboutit. The dose doesn't matter only whether or not you are in range.

I take 5mg. every day except Mon. and Thurs. which I take 2.5mg. Been running around 2.7 and this is what they want.

Thanks Al,

A question tho...does it actually have to do with how well your liver is functioning??? Someone stated their doctor remarked about the higher doseage indicating better liver function??? My liver function appears to be fine but my doseage is lower than many here (35-37mg per week)..I maintain an INR in range most of the time, unless antibiotics or other changes occur.

It is now known that it is not (usually) liver function but slight differences in the make-up of the enzymes that influence this. As yet nobody knows if one enzyme variation is better than another.

There are some liver diseases such as Budd-Chiari syndrome and gall bladder disease that affect the INR but you will know if you have one of these - be assured of that.

I only take 32 1/2 Coumadin a week. Just had a complete physical..Said liver panel was checked. this test was normal:) :) Same dosage for 15 months. Always in range. Bonnie

I only read this post out of curiosity, I'm not even on Coumadin anymore, but I just thought of something. When I was on it after my mitral repair, I know that they said there were different levels for different types of surgery. For example a mitral repair might not need to be as high as a replacement. And I think the In fact I remember the surgeon crossing out the levels that were printed on the card and putting in where he thought I should be.

The range they wanted me in was only 1.5 - 2.5 if I remember correctly, and 5 mg per day kept me there most of the time. I remember getting up to 3 once or twice and wondering if that was too high!

Jean, anything over 3.5 usually throws up the red flag. 1.5 seems low. Your window range was kind of large. I always like to stay at the upper limits of my range. For a mitral is 3.0 - 3.5.

Many studies have shown that doctors are afrain of warfarin and prescribe levels that are too low to do any good. They know that they ought to do something but are afraid to do much. Surgeons are particluarly guilty of this because they do not see people long term.

I spoke with my brother-in-law tonight (the family brain) at a family birthday party. He teaches pharmacology at a med school in Chicago, so I asked him about liver function and Coumadin. He said that there is a connection between how much Coumadin you have to take and how your liver processes it. That yes, people with healthy livers MAY end up having to take more Coumadin than usual. He also said that the amount of Coumadin you take is also affected by what other medications you are on as well (as we all know). But that there is some fact in the thought that the more Coumadin you take, the healthier liver you have.

BUT for those of you who don't take a lot of Coumadin - don't go thinking that a liver transplant is just around the corner, because many factors weigh in to how our bodies process what we put into them. I guess those of us who take more Coumadin than the average (whatever that is!) we can take comfort in the thought that we may just have livers that are over-achievers.:p

We need more details by what you mean that it doesn't work. Does your INR go down to 1.0 or what?

I am fortunate, first three months after Surgery for Mitral Valve replacement, I took 5.0mg of Coumadin. Went to 7.5 and have been there since October 2000.
