Tom,

I go snorkeling in my pool to keep in practice for scuba diving and I am always amazed at how loud the valve is underwater. I tend to think it might be somewhat like being in the womb only a bit "tinnier" sounding. Very comforting.

This has been a helpful post. I too am a swimmer and it is one of my rehab goals to start swimming again, but I am not quite ready yet. I think it will tire me pretty fast. I think 10-12 weeks is a good goal. I know I can't run until after this week which will be 8 weeks.

Ok,
I got the scoop from my surgeon today. At six weeks (next week) I can paddle around with fins and maybe jog in the water some.

At eight weeks, I can start swimming. He said to take it easy with my stroke and not to over do it. As everyone has mentioned, he's not concerned about my heart but my sternum.

And I'm still under the 8 pound lifting restriction until I hit 8 weeks. The news was better than I hoped! :)

Wonderful, Mary. You are going to feel so much better once you hit that water! :D

Glad they gave you a date and it wasn't six months away. Then I would have had to move to the opposite side and opine that the doctor was fulla beans. As it is, it sounds about right to me.

Best wishes,

Mary I'm happy for you. Justin (who is young) was allowed to swim at his 6 week check up actually ok's to surf then too much to my surprise, but I think alot of the reason was since alot of his life was affected by his heart, his doc knows he is really good at listening to his body and not over doing it. I think that is the key for alot of it, and heck you can come visit us and put your feet in the ocean Just is there right now,) Lyn www.caringbridge.org/nj/justinw

Lyn,
You'd better think about that invite; anyplace with water beside it is enough of a motivator to get me there!

We took a trip out East when I was four. We hit Maine, NY, NJ, and went into Canada. The only thing I remember from that three week jaunt was the beauty of the waves hitting the rocks below. Mom said she had to watch me like a hawk to make sure I didn't try to jump in. :p :p :p

If we ever head East, I will gladly take you up on the offer. :) :)
