Although I was told not to run for the 7 months I waited for surgery, I did walk a lot and I mean at a race walk speed, not a casual stroll.
The only problem I had with exercise post-surgery was that one of my lungs was collapsed. My doctor said something like they must have packed the ice chips a bit too hard when they opened the chest.
The first day home from the hospital though, I was out walking a mile and got up to 3 miles in a couple weeks. It was a long time before I could run though. I had to keep the intensity rather low. It took many months to fully re-inflate that lung but it did eventually come all the way back.
