Hi, I'm Shane (new to the board) just had a ev3 stent placed in my descending aorta on Dec. 6th at the Mayo Clinic. I'm looking for someone else who has had a descending aortic stent placed because my question is about post procedure pain. It's been over 3 weeks since the procedure and I've been having some pretty troubling pain. All the post procedure tests I've had everything has looked good. The doc said it won't kill me but they don't know whats causing the pain. It's mostly been in my mid back and both sides or mid chest. The pain gets worse as the day goes on and changes depending on how my body is positioned. Any more details needed ill be happy to provide. Any insight would be greatly appreciated :)

I don't know much about the stent grafts, but I can tell you that I played with an aorta stent graft at a surgeon's office that was truly a "live" demo, and one of the barbs that are made to hold it in place/in situ stabbed me. I'm not talking about a tiny poke - i mean that it went like an inch into my thumb without much pressure at all. I was pretty shocked by how easy I was stabbed... after giving it some brain cycles, I thought "how can they prevent it from poking other stuff?". It wasn't smart for me to touch stuff I didn't know about, but damn, this thing was dangerous to just have sitting in a drawer of demonstration pieces. It looks totally innocuous but technical and intriguing at first glance.

I'm probably way out in left field, but I promise I still am curious how they prevent it from stabbing stuff as easily as it did my thumb. After all, the aorta is a pulsating vessel that moves. Does it not stand to reason that those barbs move around with the aorta's movement?

Hi, Nice to meet you, but sorry you are having such pain. My son Justin is 22 and was born with TGA, but because of his left ventricle outflow stenosis,(which was his pulmonary) he couldn't have a switch.. Justin doesn't have stents in his Aorta but had 2 in his (old) pulmonary conduit for a few years that was also ballooned open a few times. He never felt anything at all. I hope they can figure out what is causing your pain and can help you soon

Thank you, it's been really up and down lately :/. I'm just looking for any ideas since its kind of a mystery. I personally I'm beginning to think only a small amount of the pain is physical and most of it is anxiety and stress related.

Was the stent placed by Catheter or Surgery?

When was the last time you contacted the Doctor that placed the stent?

Prolonged Pain is something that probably should NOT be ignored.

Have you asked for a second opinion from another Doctor such as your Primary Care Doctor or ER Doc?

IF your pain is muscular, Massage has proven to provide Faster and Better Relief than Pain Meds.

If you are in severe pain now, you should probably go to the ER.
Or call your PCP or Cardio or Surgeon? first thing in the morning.

Have you asked for a second opinion from another Doctor such as your Primary Care Doctor or ER Doc? No, but I know but I know for a fact at least 3 other doctors have looked at post procedure tests from the Dec 16th and think everything looks fine. Also they had a whole team looking at my pre Procedure tests.

If you are in severe pain now, you should probably go to the ER. Today went well, the pain was less today. Nothing in my back and a few minor pulses in my left chest

That coarc repair surgery is rough; so it's wonderful to read further repairs can be made with a stent via cath.

I've never had a stent but I've never had pain (other than at the entry) from an angiogram.

I would check with your doctors ASAP. Please let us know what you find out. Take care :)
