After four cancellations ref my AVR, Im back into Papworth again for my OHS 5th Dec ( OP 9AM 6th Dec.

how long is a piece of string question but here goes, as my last date was Oct 28th , the whole family have organised a big reunion at our house Xmas Eve and Xmas day, how were you guys 3 weeks after your surgery?

Should I cancel or will having my two children and 4 grandchildren round me be a big pick me up, no one have told me how I we feel both physically and mentaly, I'm a fit and very positive 65 year old

2ND Question

Its been suggested via Papworth that I cancel my covid booster ***, booked for 23 Nov and re book for May 6th, is this normal?

Hi Paul,

Today officially marks 3 weeks since my AVR and aneurysm repair, so hopefully I can help answer your questions. At this point, my pain is fairly well managed with the occasional Tylenol (l believe it's called paracetamol in the UK?). I'm able to get up and walk around fine. Mentally, I'm doing well - I was a bit worried as I'd heard depression is common after surgery, but I haven't experienced this. A positive attitude is key. I imagine having your children and grandchildren around would be good for your spirits. The only thing is I'd make sure no one in attendance is sick, because you don't want to catch even a cold while you're recovering. Also you probably won't feel up to cooking a big Christmas dinner, so maybe see if others are willing to help with the cooking and cleaning.

As far as the Covid booster shot, I was able to get mine about a month before surgery and my surgeon had no problem with it. In fact, he encouraged it because he wanted me to have the extra protection. I don't really see why they'd need you to reschedule, but they may have their reasons. I'd ask them about it.

If all goes well, you should be good. My sons 8th birthday party was pretty much the day after I got home. 16 days after surgery I was making dinner and passing out Halloween candy while my wife took the kids out begging. I mean trick-or-treating.

how were you guys 3 weeks after your surgery?

I felt good 3 weeks after surgery. I felt as though I could do about anything I wanted. However, there are guidelines about doing anything strenuous, especially against lifting anything over 10 pounds. So, I was careful about the physical limitations, but felt really good at that point.

I think it would be a good idea to test your family members for Covid (if they are exposed to Covid outside) before your party. You don't want a bad respiratory infection after your OHS.

As for postponing your booster ***, I think your doctors don't want any vaccine side effects to complicate your recovery.

Your state of being after 3 weeks depends upon you and your surgery. Many are lucky like Chuck, but some get complications and need to return to the hospital. For me, we had a St. Patties day party at my 3 week mark. I was present but not fully engaged as a host. I didn't do anything to prepare or clean and went to bed early.

Beware, many countries are predicting spikes at Xmas and children are carriers that's why teachers irrespective of age are allowed boosters. Testing doesn't work as proven by the White House party for the new Supreme Court justice where 48 staffers got Covid even though they were tested that morning. Yes, that's before the vaccine, but the world is now rife with the C variant which can defeat the vaccine. An AVR is major surgery and can effect you in many ways, known and unknown.

I assume you are in Great Britain. Since you have been rescheduled 4 times, I'd make it painfully clear to whomever is in charge that you don't want your surgery as an emergency procedure. After 4 cancellations, you should be a high priority for your AVR.
