I am back at home (actually got back Friday pm) they let me out after 3-1/2 days and it has really helped me with sleep (which will eventually get me stronger and back to normal). I have been told that all went very well (Thank you ARLYSS for posting my status) and I will back in the thick of things within a few weeks.

Surgery was fine (I do recall them taking out the breating tube but it was not that bad) but the worst part for me was that my bowel did not open or move for quite awhile after surgery so everytime I begged them to give me ice or water and I tried to swallow it even a drop I got the HICCUPS!!! Amazing if you think of it, one little drop of water going down your throat can cause the mose painfull HICCUPS on record!!. Other than that it went fine. Tubes came out in 24hrs and I was in my own room 24hrs after surgery, then 2 nights there and poof they said to go home!.

I have been walking 3X20 mins per day since FRIDAY. I gained about 16lbs after the surgery and have lost 12 already. SLEEP has not been optimal but since getting home I have at least come up with a routine sleep aro 10-11pm and sleep until 2-2:30am in bed. Move to the couch (so I don't wake my wife) and sleep until 5:30am, then back to bed until 8-9am. From what I have read, I should be considered lucky.

My system has almost went back to normal. Biggest downside is the shoulder, neck and left side (where they cut the Aorta I think) of my back pain. It seems to be getting better though and while I still have to take 2 vicadin at night to sleep(part of my routine) I am taking only 2 tylenol during the day for pain.

Getting a little tired so I will get back on later and continue.

Just happy to be back. Thank you for all the support and prayers.

Cory

Excellent! Glad to SEE you back, too :).

Sounds like you have a cool sleeping arrangement ... albeit somewhat odd, I'm sure. I'm surprised I didn't think of something like that for myself. Heh.

Just take it easy ... and visit us as you feel like it :).

I think you just got home in record time! That scares me a bit, but if your feeling well enough, I guess that is great.

Welcome home and welcome to your new life.

Cory,
It sounds like you're way ahead of me on sleeping and walking. I'm in a recliner, and I managed to put four straight hours of sleep together last night(that's my current best). I am going to try and get my walk in tonight after it cools off. My heart rate is still pretty high, so I've been a little afraid of pushing it in the heat.

I'm glad you've done so well, and I extend my best wishes for many, many, years of continued good health.

Welcome home! Now be good to yourself and recover nicely like a good Valver!

Congratulations on your home coming. Sounds like you have things under control and we wish you a speedy and uneventful recovery.

Yippee!!

Yippee!!

Wow, Cory! It sounds like you are having a wonderful recovery. Keep up the good work and listen to your body. I like your sleeping idea. I have a hard time staying asleep in my bed, and actually sleep a little better on the couch (Not sure why, I just do). I might try your approach. My GP just gave me a few days of Ambien to see if I can break this "I can't sleep" cycle as it is stressing me out.
Congrats on making to this side! Hard to believe we're here, isn't it?

For the extra work they did, they let you home early. Be mildly watchful for chest heaviness, new chest pain, consistent difficulty or pain when drawing a breath. You may be slightly more liable to fluid gathering around the heart, because of the extent of surgery. However, the odds are still very high that you won't have to deal with that, either. I certainly hope not.

Of course, there are probably things in your chest that feel very different right now, because things aren't hanging quite the way nature left them in your chest. It can be hard to tell what's recovery, and what's unusual.

Let the amount and assiduousness of exercise be proportional to your energy level, which will ebb and flow daily. Do what you can, but don't exceed your physical limits to exhaustion. As Mary noted, the heat is not your friend right now. If you can exercise in air conditioning, that is a plus. Just both of your luck to come home in a Bermuda high, which is chasing the remains of a tropical depression...

You're well on your way.

Stay well,

Cory

So, you just had to get one up on me, huh? Just had to get out of the hospital one day ahead of the elderly nurse who had the same procedure on the same day. Should have known you to be the competitive type. ;)

Cory, it sounds like you are doing great. It takes a while to getting back to sleeping natural, of course I didn't sleep well before the surgery. I sleep better now because I take Ambein. My shoulders and neck also hurt for a while. The doctor said it's the way they move you while doing surgery. A massage was the greatest treatment for this. Keep up the good work. You are doing wonderful! :) :)
