Hey guys, I guess I haven't been around very much lately. I have been extremely stressed out and busy.

I started my period on April 20th, and it is just NOW going away. I get my blood draws every week, and two weeks ago it was 1.8, last week it was 1.4, and this week it was within range on 2.5. So it isn't like it's the coumadin. Unfortunately because of this, I have to go to the doctor on Tuesday to find out what my options are. They said there might be a possibility of a partial hysterectomy. They don't want to do a total hysterectomy because I am allergic to the hormones that I would have to take.
I never thought that at age 25, I would be in this boat. Of coarse I never thought I would have heart disease either. Anyways, I am stressed out about that because I am wondering what all this entails, and what we're going to do with the kids, and since my husband is in charge of security, he can't take time off, so what about that? I don't know, I could be worrying about nothing here, but this has happened twice in the last three months to where I bleed all month long. Well, I better get going. Take it easy!

I have the same problem, the coumadin and the way we clot is the reason the prolonged periods. My GYN Doctor has me on Depo-provera right now. Have been on it almost a year and I was free for almost four months, when I started having problems and found out I am diabetic. I started bleeding and I almost cried, one more month till shot. I will be getting a shot next week. It is every three months I get this shot so I can keep the surgery st bay and keep from getting anemic. So far, no complaints. But the Depo-prevera shot is not for everyone. But keep your mind open to options. There is a surgery that does not require you to have the abdomon cut open. Just ask questions for options other than just surgery. Take care and keep us updated.

Hi Joy,

Good to see you posting again:)

I am sorry you are having "the issues". I have been fighting it for years now. They (my doctors) want me to have a partial.

When you have kids.... there is never a good time. I may consider it in the fall when school is back in. They said I could be in the hospital for 10-14 days because of the Coumadin. Then, there are all the post op concerns that I am not ready to deal with.

So.....2 days a month I am bedridden on pain meds. I can still find alternative ways to take care of my family even when I am that down. Doing it from a hospital bed for 2 weeks is out of the question at this point.

Hang in there and keep us posted.

Joy, I am so sorry to hear that you are having another problem. It's so hard to be mommy to two little ones without all this other stuff you have to deal with. You have been through it all, haven't you. My prayers are yours for a workable solution to have this taken care of. Hang in there, Child. Love - Ann

Hi Joy!

Hi Joy!

I don't know if this will help or if it pertains to your situation, but this is what my gyn told me. There is an IUD out there I believe called Merino or something like that. He wanted me to use it so I wouldn't have anymore children. I said no to it, because of how I feel about the possibility of it aborting a fertilized egg. It also has a small chance of causing a tubal pregnancy. My husband ended up getting a vasectomy (docs said that we should definately not have any more children), so there was no need for the IUD. While my gyn and I were talking, he told me that since pregnancy was no longer a concern, I could use the IUD to help control the extra bleeding I was getting from the coumadin. It is something that can be put in right there at the doctors office and is very easy to have removed when you are ready. My extra bleeding doesn't seem to be quite as bad as yours, so for me it isn't really a concern yet. It is an option to consider and possibly discuss with your doc. It may or may not be appropriate for your situation. I hope this has helped some.

Take Care!

hi joy!
i'm so sorry to hear that you have to deal with yet another problem.
i hope you can resolve this one quickly and easily.

hi gail!
did the doctor also tell you that iud's can often cause bleeding?? i remember when i got my first iud, i (and i'm NOT taking any coumadin like you gals) had a lot of bleeding for a few months. in fact, doctors will often remove iuds when the bleeding does not stop, so that you don't lose too much blood. the bleeding did finally stop.
something to ask about...

hope all turns out well for you, joy. please keep us posted.
be well, sylvia

Sylvia has a valid point about the bleeding and IUD's. I would be very concerned about infection too. One of these days I will bite the bullet and have the recommended surgery:eek:.

Joy, watch 'blood lron levels'. I am on an RX iron to treat anaemia from excessive bleeding.

Sylvia & Gina,
I had the same concerns about IUDs that you mentioned (bleeding and infection). My gyn told me that the new IUDs do not cause the infections like the other models. I remember doing some reading on this new IUD and it said something about bleeding in the beginning but that the newer IUDs do not cause the same problems as other IUDs out there. I will definately do some more research and ask my gyn more about this the next time I see him. He seems to think that this new IUD would be perfect for me and my situation. My gyn also happens to be a good friend. He is the one that was really straight forward with me regarding coumadin and staying on it for certain dental procedures etc...He seems to be the only doc I know that will give me straight answers regarding my situation. Thanks for your warnings and I will definately double check on them. Hopefully my bleeding won't become too bothersome.

Joy,
Please keep us posted as to how things are going with you and how they decide to treat this problem. Remember, ask plenty of questions before they do anything.

Take Care!
Gail

Hi Joy!

Hi Joy!

Just thought I'd let you know that there is another wonderful site that's very similar to this one, regarding hysterectomy. You might want to go to www.hystersisters.com to get some of your questions answered. I don't know if you'll find anyone there on coumadin, but it's possible, there are literally thousands of women on the site.

Anyway, I had found that site before I found this one, and since it was such a big help to me, when I found out about my imminent heart surgery, I was hoping to find a valve repair related site like it, and found this one 2 days prior to my heart surgery.

By the way, I did have a LAVH last October, which is a Laparoscopically Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy. (Mine was not done for bleeding problems, but for pre-cervical cancer). They make one small incision in your belly button and two more just above your-ahem-"hairline". So there's not much bleeding, and the recovery is much faster. I also kept my ovaries, so no hormone therapy. That was just a matter of personal choice for me.

This was done less than 6 months after my MV repair, but fortunately for me, I was no longer on Coumadin at the time because mine was a repair not a replacement.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
