I can hear my new heartbeat for the first time today, it's kind of weird. I have a mechanical valve and it sounds like someone is bouncing a basketball down the street. I had surgery May 30th and last night in bed was the first time I noticed it and now today I can really hear it. I lost four pounds overnight so I wonder if that is why. It doesn't sound like I thought it would, which is a good thing I guess. I thought it would be a constant tick that would drive me crazy, but so far it's o.k., just strange, in a good way.

Been 7 months for me and not sure I am used to the sound yet. I still get some PVC's and when I go to bed I can hear the extra heart beats.

Tick tock. I'm glad it's not bothering you. It took several months for mine to settle in and quiet down. Meanwhile I felt like Captain Hook's crocodile. These days I rarely hear it.

I love the beating noise. It beats in the AM and ticks in the PM. Also, deep breaths make it beat a bit louder as lungs push heart forward. Given the situation, I am not sure I would trade this in for an alternative of not hearing it at all ;)

I got my mechanical mitral valve on 4/24 after 10 years with a tissue valve. I was so worried about the ticking noise being bothersome, especially since I like it very quiet when I sleep. Like many people on the site, it hasn't been an issue. I hear it all the time and when I go to sleep but it has actually been comforting (except when I'm having lots of PVCs). Almost every time I walk into my bathroom, I think a sink or shower is dripping....then realize its my valve and laugh! I agree though, it is strange and takes a bit of getting used to.

God bless,

I was expecting a click as well, but mine thumps mildly, almost like a regular heart sound but louder.

It irritates the heck out of me. It honestly has kept me up some nights. I'm only 3 weeks post op, so I am hoping it becomes more of a lull later one...

I can bear the clicking, its the thudding I cant stand. It really gets to me, I try to take shallow breaths at night to reduce it a little bit.
I also find my pulse in my neck super strong now, another thing thats irritating me... I'm not sure why I dislike it so much.

I'm about 4 months out from an AVR and when I was newly postop, I thought my heart was going to fly right out of my chest at times, it seemed to be beating and thudding so hard.
That has settled WAY down and is quite tolerable now. The click is comforting to me - it reminds me that I am now healthier than I have been in a long, long time. Same with the strong pulses in my neck: i would rather have that than weak pulses in the neck - now the right amount of blood is getting to where it needs to get. I feel like a mental "fog" has been lifted and I think clearer and connect the dots faster than I did for awhile preop.

I've been looking for info concerning my loud thumping heart! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I'll stop worring about it now:)

I am on day 24 from AVR. I will hear mine a couple times a day. Seems when I have to cough sometimes I hear it, or like another said, when I go into the bathroom, where it's quiet. It hasn't bothered me, just a little strange. Glad I don't hear it all the time. It must be doing it's job, a I've not had any problems, and that's number one for me!
