I met with my surgeon on Monday and he answered alot of questions. We discussed using the Edwards Magna and he would implant one if that is what I want. However he did bring up the possibility of using the ON-X valve instead. The hemodynamics of which are far superior to other mechanical valves. Now the AVR surgery is scheduled Jan 23rd, and I have been second guessing my original decision to have a tissue valve. He went over the advantages of the ON-X valve with me, but I still have trouble with anticoagulation, valve noise and bleeding risks. Here I am again with that most controversial of issues, valve selection. Either valve will save my life but which one can I best tolerate living with.

I put you on the calendar for January 23rd, Rick- first one there for 2006! Now you are faced with one of the hardest decisions and I know you will work it out in time. Take a look at the thread on valve selection again and remember that whatever decision you make in the end will be the right one for you. I wish you peace with your decision and a successful surgery.

I am happy for you that you have a date to work towards. Valve selection is really tough. You must make a decision that you feel you can live with, A choice is what is important. If you feel you can be comfortable with another surgery then a tissue valve may be for you. I usually advocate avoiding more than one surgery and that is because I have had 2 more than I ever wanted. Each one gets harder and harder and I was not given a good chance of making it through the third.

Additionally I do not find Coumadin to be a problem. However, others will disagree with that viewpoint. Just do your research, make your choice, and then do not second guess your decision.

Best of luck to you.

good on you !

...a date in january with the surgeon :D
...just enough time to research this again and not drive yourself crazy..

all the best

Unless you need to make a decision sometime soon, I would suggest you continue to read and research and not fret about it now. When the time comes that you absolutely, positively need to state your preference, then go with your "gut" feeling.
You still have several months; don't let the selection process overwhelm you.

I read your profile and see you are age 58....Also, you have been a member on VR.Com for 4 years..So, you know the ropes..look back at all the posts..concerning valves and coumadin..May take awhile..but also may make the choice a little more easy for you.......:) ....If you are planning on taking life easy..I would say..go mech..and take the coumadin....but, if you have fear of the coumadin..( go tissue) and have another surgery in 10-15 years? You should still be young enough for a 2nd VR replacement....I am age 65..been on coumadin for 3 years and 8 months..with NO problems.......Any valve you choose..will give you a better life.:) Bonnie
