Hi,

I am in need of aortic valve replacement in the next 3 to 4 months and would like to know if anyone has had a valve replacement done in the jacksonville florida area.

I'm looking for suggestions on surgeons and hospitals that are known to be good in valve replacement.

thx

one of our members went from Pensacola to Tallahassee for his. But that's a long way from you. There is Shands in Gainesville. Still a long way for you.

Surely in Jacksonville there must be an excellent hospital? It is such a huge city. You might be our first member from Jacksonville. Maybe your surgeon could tell you - or your cardio. There is a site where you can go to check out the hospitals but I don't recall what it is. One of our members will stop in and recall it and tell you. You can do some searching on your own and find out hospital ratings.

I live in Orlando and had AVR performed at the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute in Orlando (Rollins St.) back in early February. I could not have been happier with the staff, facilities, and attention I received for this surgery. They were top-notch all the way. Here is their Web site ? http://www.flheart.org/

My surgeon was Dr. Kevin Accola. He is very experienced, has a wonderful, caring manner, and a quite friendly and open personality. He has been performing heart surgeries in Orlando for the past 15 years and is very busy. He is a member of Cardiovasular Surgeons, PA. Their office is downtown (217 Hillcrest St.) and their phone number is 407-425-1566. Here is their Web site? http://www.cvsorlando.com/

As for Jacksonville, have you considered the Mayo Clinic Hospital? I have no personal experience there, but I believe that would be one good option to look into.

Best of luck to you as you travel down this path towards, hopefully, a healthier heart and better life.

I'm driving up from Orlando to have the surgery done at Shands with Dr. Beaver.

6 days and counting!

Shands is only about an hour away from you! You should definitely talk to Dr. Beaver there. His office number is 352-273-5503. A lady named Diane Strong usually answers the phone.

Sknydave is going to Shands, and good luck to him! I traveled from the Jupiter area, about 4 hours, because I was convinced Shands and Dr. Beaver were the best for my situation. I had an AVR, a repair of my ascending aorta and a maze procedure.

My experience with Shands was fantastic. They are efficient and very nice. Everything went exactly as they told me it would.

The best part of my experience was that I have had no pain to speak of in my sternum. I do not have a high pain threshhold. I'm 4.5 weeks out from surgery and back at work--dress shirts seem to rub on the upper part of my scar and that annoys me, but no pain. I had pain in my shoulder blades and a little in my rib cage when I started walking a lot, but nothing close to what others report. Actually, I have to be a bit conservative because it seems impossible to have no sternum pain, so I don't say that, but I really had no sternum pain at all. It is very weird, but a good thing.

Dr. Beaver is a great guy. He gave me his email address and cell phone number. He answers my email questions promptly. He is the heart transplant guy at Shands and does about 200 open heart procedures a year. The first time my wife and I met with him, we both liked him and had full confidence in him. And he isn't paying me to say this!

Skny, I volunteered to Dr. Beaver and Diane to talk to any of their patients who are apprehensive in the least. Send me a private message if you want to talk about what to expect.

I guess you can tell I'm pretty high on Dr. Beaver and Shands!

67walkon: You actually sent me a PM 2 weeks ago that had lots of great info as far as what to expect :) I'm glad to hear you're doing well! Keep it up!

Dave, I'm doing even better now! Today is my 5th week anniversary. I went back to work this week and didn't have any problems. I feel great, my chest doesn't hurt (never has!), and I'm going back to the gym next week!

I had some major bumps along the way, but all in all, it has been pretty easy.
