hey guys,

this is what I woke up to on my birthday, and 45 minutes of digging later, it took me a running start to make it out of the driveway! and the drive, thats another story!

any tips for digging out/dealing with this much snow? I had to stop a bunch of times to catch my breath, and today I am pretty sore, maybe I should ask santa for a small snowblower. . .or just get myself one!

You might want to invest in one of those Toro snow shovels...I have one, and it's helped me immensly, considering the fact that the condo fee that we pay is supposed to pay for shoveling us out, but they don't....Just a thought for you....Harrybaby:D :D :D

I have a 3 hp Toro single stage snowblower which I bought when we lived in Windsor Ontario, which gets far less snow than where I am now. It's great in light snow but useless against the hard packed snow the road plows leave at the end of the driveway, or when we get the heavy wet stuff, or if the snow is deeper than it's height. I ended up also getting an 8 hp Toro 2 stage after moving to Waterdown and nothing gets in it's way. The other day, we got 10 cm of the heavy wet stuff and it cut through it like soft butter. If taken care of, they can last for years so well worth the investment. I've had the 3 hp for almost 20 years and only last year had a minor carb repair I did myself (about $50 cdn in parts). The 8 hp I've had for 14 years and haven't done a thing to it other than change the spark plug once.

We have a lot of ice with some snow on top. When you have to dig out of a lot of snow, take it easy and slowly, use a very small shovel so the load isn't too great. It may take you longer, but you will eventually get there. And take a lot of breaks. Someone famous said, "Inch by inch, everything's a cinch", and that's a good one to remember.

Oh, maybe you already know this, but when you have to drive downhill or uphill on a slippery slope, or any other time the road becomes heavy with snow or is slippery, put the car into a lower gear and go slower until you are out of the situation, it will give you better traction, when using brakes a lot could make you slip around.

Its been said that I/we shouldn't shovel. But sometimes its a must.

I like Nancy's motto: "Inch by inch, everything's a cinch"

What I have done is simply push what I could then took SMALL shovel fulls of snow to throw. And yes take your time, its not a race. There is no law that says it ALL has to be done at the same outing - except maybe here, where a new bylaw has been passed and fines have already been handed out for not shoveling - stupid and a different story.

Take Care Out There!

Should have mentioned this too, I recently bought a pair of Skechers "Work" Softie sneakers made for waitresses who work in wet and greasy environments. They also work for me on ice. and they are not bad looking. I got them on Zappos.com. With normal winter weather walking care, these have worked for me in extremely icy roads when I walk my dog in the early morning. I also use a walking stick just in case.

In snow covered ice, I use Yak Trax grippers which fit over your shoes.

Falls on ice are something that all of us should avoid.

It had just covered the sidewalk when I took the dogs out at 6 am. But it HASN'T STOPPED YET. Temperature hovering about 30. We'll probably only get an inch or two. When temperatures stay low, it's the melt and refreeze that gets us the next day.

Nancy, I just ordered Yak Trax. Maybe they'll come today.

Monday was horrible....hubby stayed home. Cleaning the driveway in high winds is absolutely futile.
I guess we ended up with about a foot of new stuff, and some drifts are 2 1/2 feet deep.
Today the sun is out in a clear blue sky....it's so fresh and beautiful.:)
Perfect for snow-shoeing or skiing.

That picture is great. That's a keeper. I the snow isn't welcome, but it looks so cool in that shot.

Not so bad here, just enough to cover things and make you clean if off.

:D SNOW DAY FOR TEACHERS/KIDS TODAY IN MY AREA!!:D We only have so many days built into our school calendar for snow! Seems we are starting earlier than usual this year!

Hmmm....well, at least ya'll got more than we did ... I think.

*shudders*

I still haven't found a winter beater car either. Dangumit.
