Glad you've got your date, and I'll put you on the calendar.
Regarding meeting your surgeon for the first time in the surgical theater, I think I've read that's not uncommon at the bigger institutions. Others will chime in with their experiences so maybe you'll have more answers pretty quick.:)

Congratulations on getting your date. My first OHS was a few days before Christmas (was emergent) and I would not have chosen that date given the option.

There have been a few here who did not meet their surgeons until the surgery and they seemed okay with that. I never, ever could have done that but that is just me.

Though the same surgeon was operating on me that did my first surgery four years prior, it was mandatory for me to meet with him prior and 'reacquaint' ourselves with each other. I needed to feel his hands on me while I was awake and aware. :)

The surgery I had at Christmas, I came home December 29... just in time for New Years. :)

Best wishes. I'm sure you'll do fine going into it young and otherwise healthy.

1. Heck yes, it snows and snows and snows in MN in January. Been to the Winter Carnival several times in St. Paul, but that's later in January.

2. Yes, been there, done that. My surgeon was on vacation when I set the date. Had not even had a heart cath or TEE. Those were done the day before surgery and on the OR table.
I would definitely advise getting all tests done before going into the hospital, though.

Gary,
I found it was easier once I had the date set. The folks on this site will be able to provide lots of support as you get closer to the big day. Best wishes for your upcoming surgery.

Congrats on getting your date set - and what a great date!! Just think how much more you'll have to celebrate next New Years!!

Meanwhile, I've been able to meet my surgeon prior to the surgery (I met mine in March) but I don't think I'll see him again now until the day.

A : )

Congratulations on setting the date. Enjoy the Christmas holidays as you'll be busy with recovery in the new year. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth, speedy, recovery in 2009.

Congratulations on setting the date for your surgery. What a wonderful way to start the New Year with a brand new valve! I've heard people say they haven't met their surgeon until the day of the surgery, but i would prefer to meet him ahead of time and ask him any questions i had.

Yes, it does snow in Minnesota...lots of snow....my ex-husband was from Duluth, Minnesota and i live in the snow belt below Buffalo, NY and i think we get a lot of snow, but he said it was nothing compared to Duluth.

My best wishes and prayers are with you for a successful surgery and a quick recovery. Happy Thanksgiving!
