On top of having a very busy Easter. I got a new dog last night. My husband's brother who lives down at the lake, his son had a dog dropped at his house out in the country. They had had her for two weeks and was keeping her in the garage because he doesn't like animals in the house. He was going to take her to the humane society today, well my brother-in-law remembered about me having to have my precious little "Cuddles" put to sleep in January so he decided I needed this little dog. My husband was completely against getting another dog. But guess what, I went down to see her and ended up bringing her home with me. She is a very tiny Maltese and was very thin and badly neglected. I took her to the vet today and he said she was about seven years old. She had a micro chip in her so the vet traced it to a puppy mill but the puppy mill didn't know who the people were that had bought her and they never registered the micro chip with the company. The vet thinks she probably was a kennel dog just used for breeding purposes and the people just got tired of her and turned her loose. She had a lot of rotten teeth and had not been spaded. So she spent the day at the vets getting her bad teeth pulled (her breathe smelled horrible) and getting spaded and all her shots. I'm supposed to pick her tomorrow after I get off work at noon. Poor little thing. She is so sweet and good natured and she loves to be petted and loved. I named her "Sugar" because she is so sweet. I'm sure this is going to cost me a pretty penny but the vet is a friend and he said he would cut me a deal because I had taken her in. Me and my animals! ! !

Way to go Glenda.
You are the best thing that little dog could have hoped for.

Glenda:

What a wonderful story! I had tears in my eyes reading it.
Can you get the microchip company (AVID or Home Again, my guess) to transfer ownership in their files to you? There might be a slight fee, but but would be worth it -- "just in case."

Oh Glenda....so happy to hear that! I'm sure that Sugar will be eternally grateful to have such a wonderful master as you & you will be rewarded with her unconditional love for many years to come! :)

Glenda,

I'm happy for you. I've always known it was good to have a dog. But as I age, I realize how very good it is to have a little dog.

No one can take the place of Cuddles for you, but Sugar will build her own nest in your heart.

Very best wishes,

Yet another example of why I call you "The Good". I hope John takes a fancy to her too.

Thanks everyone. Hey Brian I wondered who John was? My husband's name is Eddie but I knew who you were talking about. He just doesn't get close to animlas like I do. Sugar is still at the vets. She spiked a fever of 104 so the vet said she may have a touch of pneumonia so he wanted to start a IV. I called him later in the evening and he said she was so much better. She was eating, her temperature had dropped and I could pick her up this afternoon. He seemed to think because of so much they had done to her some of the infection in her teeth may have got into her lungs. I pray that she will be okay. I can't wait to get her home and start loving on her. I just need something to love & pet. I love my boxer and although he wants to be a lap dog, he's way too big.

I just picked her up from the vet. She seems to be doing okay although she has cough now. The vet seems to think it was from the tube being put down her throat. He wants to see her back on Friday just to see how she is doing and check out her lungs. She is the sweetest things, after all she has been through she still had kisses for me. She's on some very strong antibotics and pain medicine. Now if I can just house break her, after all she's been kept in a kennel. She doesn't lease very well at all and with me working it's going to be hard. I just hate to keep her in a crate after what she has been through. Oh well, just another challenge.

Glenda:
I'll bet that the cough -- probably sounds like a barking cough -- is from the trach tube. She's a small dog, and the trach tubes are sometimes a little too big for small dogs and cats. Several of my cats have had coughs post-op. My vet has usually given a shot of dexamethasone, which reduces the irritation, and it goes away PDQ. If it's not better Friday, ask about a shot of dex.
