I, too, am one of those who couldn't concentrate. Seemed like every time I woke up, I quickly dosed off again. The required walks around the ward helped and I happened to have a room-mate and we had such fun talking (when we weren't suffering from pump head and forgot the words we wanted to say).
Before surgery I found the book, "Your Heart, an Owner's Guide" by Dr. John Elefteriades and Lawrence Cohen to be a pretty good light, simply written book that was helpful before and after surgery. Much more comprehensive than Adam Pick's book and definitely written for those who don't know a thing about their hearts and the problems that happen.
Fair wind and full sails to your surgery.
