Hello my name is Ronda and I was here back in 2004. Had mitral valve repair on 04-16-2004 and been doing really well until now, except for tiredness at times throughout the year, but doctors said I was fine. After doing on of my yearly check ups and echos they found that the ring around my valve has clamped down onto my valve causing stenosis, so you all know what that means.

My first cardiologist or intern said I needed a TEE and it may not be that bad and he scheduled me for a thoracic surgeon because at the time one of my sternum wires had popped out of my chest, yes popped out. Well don't ever mess with those things when they do that, because I clipped mine and it was still sticking out by the time I seen the intern cardiologist, but by the time I got to the thoracic surgeon it had went most of the way back in.

While talking to yet another (thoracic surgery) intern about the wire, he had me go take x-rays and come back right afterwards. He then went to the head thoracic surgeon who has no pitty on you what so ever, he came in and basically said there's no need for him fixing the wire because I needed to have open heart again -- he had been reading my file.

Well I wasn't prepared for that at all, now I kind of figured I would have to have surgery again but was still hoping the TEE I was scheduled to take would say otherwise -- so here I go again. He continued to say that I had a bigger risk the second time and I would have to get a mechanical valve and be on blood thinners for the rest of my life then proceed to write up all the pre-op blood work and cath. All this happened right before Christmas, what a gift!

Anyway he then proceeded to push on my chest really hard where the wire was sticking out, OMG! It hurt so bad because my sternum has been sore for the last 4 years, like I said this guy had no mercy. And why was he doing that anyway? Went home and took neurontin for pain, felt much better. I take this for degenerative disc disease and other pain I have throughout my body.

On top of that, before this last appointment my internal medicine doctor told me that my lungs were shrinking. No explanation why, just told me I needed to take more PFT's and would be sent to Pulmonary doctors. I've been suffering with a unknown illness or disease for 12 years but they said there wasn't anything wrong with my lungs, but now it is, go figure. So the risk just tripled for heart surgery, if I'm able to have the surgery. That's is what the thoracic surgeon told me also, if I'm able to have it.

Been having shortness of breath pretty bad and can't bend over sometimes without having problems with breathing. Thoracic doctor told me it was probably from blood backing up in my lungs from the stenosis.

I wanted to ask if anyone after heart surgery had horrible arm pain like someone's squeezing a main artery in your arm and arm gets weak and can't lift? This has been going on with me for 4 years and wakes me up from my sleep, no one seemed to care until the other day when they told me that sometimes nerves under the arm get messed up sometimes because your arms are spread outward during surgery.

Well hope I didn't rant to much, want to say hello to everyone and I'm praying for you all going in and coming out. God Bless!!!

Good Grief!!! What kind of doctor is that? I would think he could have found a better way to do a physical exam with some kind of caring. Is this the person who is going to be operating on you??

He sounds like a brute!

I certainly hope he doesn't act like a 1000 lb. gorilla when he is operating on delicate tissues.

Nancy, I know, he is kind of rough but believe it or not he is probably the only one out of all of them I would want to operate on me. He's been the head of thoracic surgery and has done open heart surgery for 25 years. All the others are just interns, so I really have no choice. I'm just going to put all my faith in God that everything is going to be alright, because I'm terrified and I know he's there for me. Thanks for your concern.

I'll let everyone know when the surgery will be if I'm going to be able to have it. You all have always been there for everyone, I've been in the shadows for the last four years but always checked in to see what was going on with everyone. I will continue to pray for you all.

1.
To be quite honest, I would start looking for another thoracic surgeon with better manners. I would not go to a doctor that treat me like that....sorry if I sound harsh, but I really think you deserve better. Look for top surgeons in your area and go for a second opinion.

maka,

Well I would look for another doctor but unfortunately I have been out of work for the last 8 years or longer due to chronic health problems and was turned down for disability numerous times (story of my life). So I'm one of those people who's on a charity program with the hospital. My husband can't afford health insurance for us, he's a veteran so he goes to the VA. He was down with colon cancer right before my last heart surgery, but he's in remission now, praise God! Thanks for your concern. God is Good!

Sorry to hear of your difficulties. Unfortunately, I can't provide any insughts on your questions. My sternum is sensitive but I can't really say it has been sore after it healed from the surgery. I haven't experienced the arm pain you've described either. I do get muscular aches and pains around my shoulders, neck, and back, sort of like arthristis, which can be attributed to the way I was twisted around for the surgery.

Best wishes and good luck.

Thanks WayneGM for your input on the arm pain. The pain I'm having is a pain that when you feel it you know something is definitely not right. So it could be nerves, that would explain the horrible pain I go through and why my arm becomes weak and I can't lift it. I really thought it seemed more like a stroke, but I've had so many over the years I guess it wouldn't be that. But thanks again for your input and concern.

Blake, it is good that you trust this surgeon as that it is the most important thing and for what you are saying, he seems to have a lot of experience. Sometimes people come looking very rough, but guess what, I?ve also found that those are the ones that have little patience with ineptitude and careless errors and they end being the best as they raise the standards..
As to the pain in your arm, I have had a few times (not many, thanks God) the most excruciating pain where the neck meet the shoulder. It comes without any reason or warning. It only lasts a minute or so, but it is so painful that if it lasted longer I think I?ll scream and pass out. I?m sure it has something to do with a pinched nerve as those are the worse pain I can think of.
I??ll pray that everything goes well with you and yes...God is good and I?m sure He is looking after you

OMG what a brute !

OMG what a brute !

Anyway, it's good to hear you have confidence in him, and if he has a lot of experience, well .... maybe you will just have to suffer his bad bedside manners. That being said, I had a minor surgical issue at the tail of my spine many years ago, had seven or eight stitches in there, and couldn't sit or do anything except lie on my stomach. Well, every morning when he did rounds, he would slap me on the butt and ask how I was doing. The guy was actually knighted while I was in hospital if you can believe that!

As for your other problems, try and get your liver checked out - my MIL had several minor nagging things wrong with her that went undiagnosed for a long while, and it all stemmed from liver problems .....

netmiff, I think you're right I'm just going to have to suffer his bed side manners. His experience is all I'm thinking about right now.

Wow! that is just awful about that doctor slapping your butt, never heard of such a thing.
