Just a quick note to let everybody know that my Gall Bladder removal was successful. Very quick, very efficient.

I got to Saint Thomas at 10:30AM on Thursday. They took me back to the staging room where they took some blood, had me get back into the goon gown. Then I basically just laid there until around 12:00PM. I was supposed to have my surgery at 12:30, and was beginning to think they had forgotten about me. But right after 12:00PM they came back and said "Let's get ready".

They gave me a shot of heparin to help me not to form blood clots. Got my stats and I was on my way.

When they got me in the pre-op room they asked me all the same questions again. They shaved the bottom half of my chest and stomach, put my IV in and started to give me the meds to make me feel good. I asked them if there were any issues with going under anesthesia 4 times in one year. The anesthesiologist said they have some people that come in for what ever procedure it is they are coming in for, and go under every two weeks. So that made me feel better.

The difference between my OHS and my Gall Bladder removal, is that I actually remember being wheeled into the Operating Room this time. They said that the meds that they gave me prior to knocking me out would probably make me forget that conversation. However, I still remember it. What I do remember was that the clocks started moving on the wall right before I was out. I think I might have even commented on it.

Waking up was another story. They said that I should wake up and be leaving the hospital around 4:00. Well, lets just say I enjoy being under the good stuff. I don't think I had actually woken up enough until 4:00PM, or maybe a little later. Didn't actually get to leave the hospital until 6:00PM. Not to mention it was raining really bad, so we didn't get home until 7:00PM. So I had no food for 18 hours.

Now here is my question. I had a bowl of chicken noodle soup for dinner with some crackers, due to the fact they want me to stay on the bland diet for the next couple of weeks. By around 10:00PM, my fingers started swelling up like hot dogs. Never had this happen after my OHS. I went and weighed myself, and the scale showed that I had put 3 to 4 pounds on since that morning. Only a bowl of soup to eat. Granted, I'm not sure how much IV they pumped into me, but with the fact that I am only a couple months post-op from my OHS, should I go back on my diuretic for a couple days? I left a message with my nurse at Vandy to see what they think. Hopefully I'll hear back from her today. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated. By the way, the swelling was down some this morning.

So I am determined that THIS IS IT!!! No more surgeries. Looking forward to fully recovering from everything and having a wonderful 2008.

Hope that everybody has a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a wonderful 2008. I really appreciate everybody's kind words and information they had for me leading up to my Mitral Valve repair. It really helped me make it through this time a lot easier then I would have if I hadn't found this site.

Take Care Everyone!!!

Sounds like the anesthesia or something made you retain fluid. I hope that you hear back from your nurse soon. What kind of diuretics do you have? Can you take a small dose? Chicken soup and crackers does have a lot of salt in it. I'm sure that it will resolve on its own in a few days, but a baby dose of diuretic might speed it along.

Wow, Jeff. Glad to hear from you so quickly, and delighted everything went well. Don't really know the answer to the question -- could it be the salt in the soup? That's just a wild guess, based on other discussions I've seen here. I'm sure people who are more knowledgeable will be along soon...

Jeff,
If you've still got diuretics left over, I'd take them. Make sure you eat a few bananas every day to keep your potassium level up, but other than that, I'm sure it won't do any harm to use them up.
It's great to hear you came through the operation so easily. Did I mention before that my mother-in-law just had surgery the first week of December at Vanderbilt? It seemed like a great medical facility when we were there.

Thanks for the heads up on the diuretics. I actually just got a call back from my heart nurse. She told me to go back on my Torsemide and my Potassium. She said I shouldn't have to be on it for me then two or three days. Said it never hurts to go on this combination of medicines after a surgical procedure. So I'll start those tomorrow morning.

I didn't realize that. Are you in the Nashville area? Or did you come in from out of town. I felt like I was practically living at Vanderbilt in October. I really felt like they have a great hospital over there.

Glad to see you came through with flying colors, Jeff and hope you are well enough to enjoy some Christmas goodies!

Hi Jeff -

Glad everything went well. Thanks for the update.

I had a surgery a year ago and when I got out of the hospital bed the next morning, my thighs were like sausages! It was a different type of surgery from yours but they told me to walk as much as I could; so I did and the swelling/fluid retention went away within a short time, a couple or a few days or so.

Hope your recovery is smooth.

Our hometown (where Bob's mother still lives) is about 4 hours NW of Nashville in southern Illinois. We now live in Cape Girardeau, MO which is about 3 hours NW of Vanderbilt. However, we had taken a trip to Florida, and were on the second day of the return trip when she had her surgery. We were able to stop and check on her, which was good.
Typically patients from southern Illinois are sent to Vanderbilt if they have serious conditions that need the expertise of a teaching hospital. I haven't looked your town up on the map; where are you in relation to Nashville?

glad to hear it went well and wishing you a speedy recovery. Can't remember if I posted it here or on another forum, but DH and I have had such a bad year that we have decided to run away somewhere if there is another year scheduled that ends in 07 :D You may want to consider joining us ;)

Things were at their worst around Thanksgiving. I really wasn't sure what the problem was with me at that point. My plate of food was actually smaller then my two boy's. Couldn't even eat a piece of pumpkin pie. I would be happy if I could just eat some cookies over Christmas!! I'm pigging out in 2008!!! ;)

If I'm told I'm looking at something else, I may need to take you up on your offer!! I'm looking at a surgery free 2008 and beyond. It's good to know I have options though. :D

We have more in common then Nashville.

I don't have any advice to offer but wanted to wish you luck. We have a son and his family in Nashville. We were there for Thanksgiving.

We actually live just south of Nashville in Murfreesboro. I can make it downtown in about 25 minutes from here.

I see from your profile that you live in Louisiana? My wife and I are actually from Shreveport, LA. We're always going down there to visit family. Small world!!

It is a small world. Our son lives in the Bellevue area, we have friends whose daughter and her family live in Murfreesboro and my husband has a brother, and three nephews living in Shreveport.

It's amazing how easy it's been to just run into people on the forum here. Got to meet Kandice because she was having her mitral valve repaired six days before mine.

You'll have to shoot me a PM if your ever going to be coming through here again. I also travel up to Indiana a lot to do some work up there. Looks like you made your way through there too.

Take it easy.

Hi, Jeff - good to see you. Glad all went well. I find it a little hard that chicken soup and crackers would cause a weight gain of 3 or 4 lbs, but could be, I suppose. Keep an eye out and let us know how you are.

I wish you a no surgery year in 2008! Merry Christmas - Happy New Year. Blessins.........

Glad to have you back and sounding so optimistic and well!!!!! Hold those thoughts!

Have a lovely holiday now that you are back in one piece and on track for a well earned complete recovery.

Best wishes.

Marguerite
