Because of caring people and a caring company, a terminally ill little Green Forest girl was flown home Friday by air ambulance from M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, so she can spend her last days surrounded by the people who love her most.

Jada Harper, who turned seven on Sept. 1, has an inoperable malignant tumor in her brain and is in a coma with a ventilator doing her breathing for her. She has been at the famous cancer center in Houston since July, but her situation is now at the point not much else can be done to help her.

Friday afternoon, Jada was flown home to the Ozarks — on a gurney, attached to the machine that breathes for her. FedEx Freight paid the $11,000 bill for the special medical flight her family was unable to afford.

Thank you for sharing that. It's really nice to hear that she will be "carried" in such a way to her family and loved ones...

What a mix of emotions here Godbless all involved heartwarming yet sooo
heartbreaking :(

I am in my first visit to the Small Talk thread. Thanks for sharing this story, Ross! It is nice to hear of this company doing such a nice (and undoubtedly expensive) thing for this young lady!

Wonderful thing Fedex is doing for her and her family. And MaryKa...welcome to SMALL TALK.. We're not all serious around here all the time..:D

I'm sure there are other corporate sponsors that do things like this with no public recognition, but I wish more would do so and get the respect that doing something like this deserves.

Ross is correct that many corporations are involved in these endeavors. Here's some of what my employer does. I'm sure others can share similar stories.

We are currently in the middle of the 2009 UnitedHealth Group Giving Campaign.

Although there are many organizations to give to through this campaign, one that's promoted is the UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation. In 2008 the foundation gave out 595 grants (about $2 million) to families with ill or disabled children to help cover their out of pocket costs. You can read more about it here.

Another foundation we have is United Health Foundation. You can read about it here:

UnitedHealthcare, sometimes as UnitedHealth Group other times alone, also sponsored or joined numerous activities to raise funds for health research and healthcare, including those by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, PEACE of Heart, and many, many more. All employees are encouraged to not only give money, but to give time, and there is recognition for those that do so. We call is Social Responsibility.
