Hi All

Earlier this year I contracted infective Endocarditis. As result I've had a MVR with a mechanical valve put in place. I have a question.

Theoretically I'm at a higher risk to get Endocarditis again. Should I be worried about every little infection I get and if I ever got it again. Would I need another replacement?

Any info is greatly appreciated

only thing i can say but would imagine this should already of been advised by your cardio ,make sure you get antibiotic cover for dental work involving the gum line , think the rest is difficut to say as i understand its flu like sysmptoms if in doubt check it out , would rather be wrong than leave it to chance talk it over with your GP and dentist , my dentist told me if i get flu like symptoms fever with in 10 days of dental work get it checked out , i have had difficulty getting the antibiotic cover because of NICE guidelines but thats a whole another topic just below this one :)

while its true you will be considered higher risk of recurrence you don't need to worry at everything. However if you cast your mind back to the days before diagnosis you'll perhaps recognise some symptoms which were "out of the ordinary" (night sweats, a persistent mailaise).

Look for those and take precautions such as antibiotic cover when having dental cleaning, much better dental hygiene generally (proper flossing - consult your dental hygienist and pay careful attention to the specifics of direction of how to floss properly).

You'll be fine

Best Wishes

I can't believe the ******** you've gone through just to get some antibiotics. Can't you get some on the black market and stock up? Have you tried a drug dealer?

after this last encounter of my tooth/root extraction of two days !! ,if i could find genuine online antibiotics i would purchase in a heart beat , i have been looking but hard to tell whos who, just hoping my old cardio responds ,

thanks for the offer not sure how it works probably wouldnt be a problem as i have seen places like america ! who sell and ship to uk , but the ip address appears linked to india when you look deeper so could be fake or possibly not up to standad , wrote to my last cardio a week ago still not heard back , wish i could understand why they take the NICE as law and ignore my request as a higher risk , as i said before this is not a one off but most of the dentists i have encountered in hertsfordshire giving me the same problem

I had IE back in 2014 but the valve was not damaged. Unfortunately, a piece of vegetation shot to my right leg and I needed an emergency arterial thombectomy and 3 compartment fasciotomy. I'm good, but yes you need to be cognizant of fevers. I'd get chummy with a good ID doctor. Mine is still on my health team and in the event of future procedures, for example, maybe hernia surgery, maybe a prostate biopsy, it's good to consult with a specialist. Yes I listed real examples I experienced. Dental premed is a given.
