Here's the link to the latest update on CaringBridge, for those that are interested.
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/cherielayton

I just copied and pasted today's entry below, but if you want to see the rest, you can go to the link.

I'm feeling it now......this is ACTUALLY going to happen, and it's scary. No way around that. BUT, I have absolute confidence in my doctors. We do not have an actual time for surgery on the 27th, and according to the dr, we won't until probably Sunday night, when the hospital calls, and tells us when to be there.

The cardiologist thinks I should get a mechanical valve (IF the repair is not an option), which was surprising to me, given the fact that I have a history of bleeding ulcers (that required surgery), but I'll wait and see what the surgeon has to say tomorrow.
Anyway, below is today's journal entry on Caringbridge. Thanks for the prayers, good thoughts, and support from this awesome forum! Cherie

Not gonna lie. Getting kinda tired of being poked and prodded. Today, met with the electrophysiologist, and they've decided that the particular ablation that I need is best done with catheters.....in other words, NOT during my open heart surgery.

They tried to get it scheduled for tomorrow, but there was no availability. So, the plan, at this point, is for it to happen approximately five days after my surgery, while I'm still in the hospital. If, for some reason, this is not optimal, they will adjust the plan accordingly.

After that, I had my TEE (transesophageal echocardiogram). It was LONG, and somewhat uncomfortable. (I'm a gagger, what can I say). It WAS very helpful, though. Dr. Miller feels it's clearly defined as a perforation in the left cusp of my aortic valve. This is "good" news, as it makes it more likely that a repair, rather than replacement is possible. We'll know more, after I see the surgeon tomorrow. My surgeon is Hartzell Schaff, M.D. and he is one of the best in the world! We are so incredibly blessed that this has worked out for me to have these amazing doctors to take care of me (that's a shout-out to you, too, Stan!).

After the TEE, had a renal ultrasound to rule out any problem that could be causing my hypertension. None was found. It may just be that I have developed hypertension (thanks, Mom. I always blame Mom;)

Then, Scott and I met with Dr. Miller at the end of the day (again), to go over all the results from today, and the plan for tomorrow.

My priority right now, is to stay healthy (no cold or flu), so that surgery will happen on Monday. We don't have a time, yet, and according to Dr. Miller, probably WON'T, until Sunday night, when the hospital will call to tell me when to be there.

We both got more sleep last night, so today was better, in that regard.

Okay, that's all for now. We can feel the love & support heading our direction! Hugs! Cherie & Scott

Glad everything is going according to plan so far. Hope it continues to go well. I know you have a couple of "down" days coming up, I hope you and your husband are able to enjoy them before the big day.

Best wishes, Cherie. BTW, your avatar family picture is just beautiful! Oh, and don't hesitate to remind the surgeon about your bleeding ulcer issues. Sometimes we may think that the doctors or surgeons are completely familiar with our history but they may not be. Please keep us posted as you can :)

Editing to add: I was thinking more about your ulcers. Most though not all of us with tissue valves are on a daily enteric (coated) aspirin therapy. Maybe aspirin is contraindicated with your ulcer issue?

Cherie, I am sending you positive vibes, and you will be in my prayers on Monday. If you are like most of us a you should experience a feeling of calm and peace just before surgery. I believe that is when our guardian angels take over to help us over this mountain...

THURSDAY's update

THURSDAY's update

As copied from caringbridge

Okay, this will probably be the last update for a couple of days. Saw the surgeon today, and am all set for Monday the 27th. He is very "formal", although, pretty sure I saw him sort of smile, at the end;)

Afterwards, I called the cardiologist (on his day off), on his cell phone, as he had told me to, and we talked about my appointment with the surgeon. He is VERY nice, and told me to call him "at any time", if I have any questions at all. He will also be at St. Mary's, the whole time I'm there, so that works out well for me!

The final word on timing of the surgery is this: we're to call a phone number, Sunday evening, and they will tell me what time to be there. Then, my surgery will happen, approximately two hours after that. The surgery is expected to take about three hours, whether they do a valve repair OR a valve replacement.

Gotta stay close to the room tomorrow, because am doing a "24 hour" lab test thingy.

Okay, that's all for now. We probably won't have much to report, until Monday, and REMEMBER! Scott will be posting, from that point on, so he will be responsible for the content :0

Love & hugs to all! Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!Cherie & Scott

Thanks Cherie and look forward to Scott's positive updates

Remember Scott, if you are uncertain ASK there are plenty of people to help here

Just wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow is Cherie's actual surgery date and wish her well. I'm sure everything will turn out great and I for one am looking forward to an update on her caringbridge page from her husband tomorrow confirming just that.

Sundays dry run post

Sundays dry run post

Hi everyone, this is Scott. This is a test to see if I'm doing this right. Cherie is supervising, RIGHT next to me (no pressure!).

Anyhow, we just found out a few minutes ago that we have to be at the hospital at 6:30 AM tomorrow (central time). As they have told us before, the surgery should be two hours after that and the surgery will last about three hours.

I will update Caringbridge as soon as the procedure is over.

Thank you so much for everyone's prayers and support.

MONDAY from Scott

MONDAY from Scott

Monday, December 27, 2010 1:06 PM, CST

We're nearing the home stretch. Cherie has been taken off life support and placed in recovery and will be moved into ICU when she's done. IF she behaves that is!

The cardiologist went out of his way to find me (no easy task since this place is huge) to tell me that they were able to repair the valve rather than doing a valve replacement. One of the things we were praying for. She still has another procedure to go through to try and fix her other problem and that may not happen until later this week or into the next. We should know about that in a couple days.

I want to thank everyone for all the prayers, and there's a bunch of you. I can't believe the things people have done. Please continue to pray for the upcoming procedure. Also for Sam and Cherie's parents as this has been stressful for them.

I will update on her progress and the upcoming procedure. I'm sure Cherie will be chomping at the bit to get on FB as soon as she can. I'll try to make sure she's not to drugged up when she does!

Thank you again,
Scott and Cherie

Scott, I have highlighted the repair fact as I know that is what you were REALLY wanting
