My father and brother are neurosurgeons. I've heard and witnessed many unbelievable stories, such as the boy who took off his seatbelt for a few minutes to rest after a soccer game. His father, a radiologist scolded him. During this timeframe, the father ran through a stop sign, hitting an oncoming car and sending his pre-teen son through the windshield which permantly disabled him. The father refused to believe that his spinal cord injury was permanent. He even contacted Chrisopher Reeve before his death, begging for help. My brother, the chief neurosurgeon on his case looked at me across his desk and asked, "Do you understand now why I cannot accept that God is good?" I said, "Jeff, Humankind isn't good; our original sin has born death, and all the pain and suffering that comes with it."
Heart surgeons and brain surgeons have to have an incredible spirit of hope to survive. I believe my father and brother live in denial. I do, too to some degree but for the most part, I grasp life and believe that God is good, and His purpose is greater than our understanding.
I grieve for the loss of this man but I understand his hopelessness. I pray that God forgave him, and that he will experience the peace the passes all understanding.
