Well, here I am - over the mountain in more ways than one! I'm now 51 years old and have a new porcine valve! My family and friends are all into the pig jokes! I went in on monday, 10/22 and came home friday 10/26. There was talk of me going home on thursday, but I didn't push it, and besides I liked my roommate! The surgeon also did a "aortic wrap". I don't know why - I asked, but I was pretty loopy and can't remember. I go see him on thursday, so I'll ask. I have a 4" incision that is pretty tender right now, but not horrible. I am just amazed that 6 days ago, I had heart surgery and can be sitting at the computer now. I haven't had the energy to look up "aortic wrap" yet on the internet - maybe today.
I did not wake up with tubes down my throat, thank god. I had a hard time swallowing food all week though. I need to make sure it's chewed up very small it seems. big deal! Oh, I lost about 12 pounds this week. I want to think it's because I'm not eating that much, but I'm sure it's due to the water pill I'm still taking. When my sister called one day, the first thing I said was "na-na, na-na-na - I lost 10 pounds!" lol we are constantly battling it. I can't say I had much of an appetite till wednesday. My husband was terrific thru the whole thing - he was scared to death. My friends are bringing over food by the boatload and my 4 sons are loving it! 2 are still in college, so they aren't complaining. Yesterday they were all here, with my daughter in law - it felt like a holiday. It was a wonderful day, but a little too long.
Lankenau Hospital was wonderful. I would recommend it in a heartbeat! :)
Well, back to the recliner (best investment!) and hopefully I'll be posting soon saying how well I'm doing...everyday I get so much stronger, It's amazing.

So great to hear you are doing so well. Enjoy your new found health and let that beautiful family spoil you for a while.

congrats on a successful surgery! i was in your shoes just 11 days earlier. it's amazing what the body can go through. i can understand your lack of energy as well. i take about 2 or 3 cat naps a day after my walks. take it slowly and steadily and eventually you'll be able to sleep in a horizontal position and will start to feel like your normal self again.

Welcome to this side of the mountain. I's glad to hear you are doing so well. Take it easy and pace yourself. Best wishes for a smooth, uneventful, recovery.

WONDERFUL NEWS ... and WELCOME HOME!

Good to see you up and posting again!

Thoughts/prayers coming your way for a continued SUCCESSFUL recovery :).

Nice to know! Thanks! I can't wait to sleep flat and be able to roll over. Today I took a 4 min walk around my house outside, then a shower! Needed a nap after that! LOL

Donnmarie,

Congrats...Every day will get better & better. Enjoy the pampering as long as they will let you rest..! I went back to work 3 weeks after AVR - Big mistake...Take all the time you need + 2 weeks..Ha ha.....:D

Congrats!!! I think you ought to get a piggy bank and everytime someone makes a pig joke - they have to donate!:D

Donnamarie,
I'm so happy to hear of your successful surgery. Going home on Friday is awesome. I really didn't feel up to it although if my coumadin levels would have been okay, they would have let me go. I found the hospital quite peaceful and I slept great. I'm missing my hospital bed. It's much easier to get out of bed with the controls.

Wishing you a smooth and easy recovery.
Jean

Congrats,
Looks like the 22nd was a good day for a valve job for you and I as well as JAJ99.
Unlikely any of us will forget the 22nd.
Glad to hear your both on the other side.
Speedy recovery and a full life.
Kman

Donnamarie, I am glad to hear that your surgery went well and you are on the other side of the mountain. Two weeks after breast surgery I asked my surgeon if I could use vitamin e oil or mederma on my scars and he told me mederma worked better. Twice my oncologist has complimented me on how well my two scars have healed. May God bless you!

Congrats on your recoveries JAJ99, Kman, and Donnamarie.

Oh, my husband and I bought a recliner yesterday, it will be delivered on Thursday! :D I told my husband about Donnamarie's post over the weekend and off we went.

James - I like that! I told work at least 4 weeks - so I'm covered. I work 10 min from home at a computer most of the day - it's very flexible - I can even work at home for some of it if I want. We'll see.
