Her name is "Esme" defined as "esteemed". She's pretty special. She was a bait dog so she's missing teeth and when she was younger you could see a lot of scars on her muzzle and front legs. She's never attacked anything, nor snapped or growled at humans. She came afraid of men and it took me a couple of years and lots of treats to get her to trust me. She has no trouble with ladies. It must be part of her bait dog training, but aggressive dogs take great expception to her and attack w/o any more provocation than a bark. They will leap off front porches. Esme being what she is doesn't retaliate because she does what I tell her. So she's been bit a few times on walks. She loves other dogs, especially submissive ones. Where we board her when on vacation, she gets walked with the little dogs. As you can guess, we're Bully for Pits. I have a Pit Bull & Parolees T-shirt my daughter got in NOLA.

What a horrific story for a beautiful dog to endure. I'm so glad she found a loving, patient home to call her own for the rest of her days. Sounds pretty typical of former fighting/bait dogs...Just eager to please, that simple. A lot of folks says its how the dogs are raised that ingrains their attitude, but I like to think that the people and situation surround them has more of an impact than any upbringing does. A dog is a dog is a dog. All are capable of love and respect if they are surrounded by it.

Beautiful baby. I tend to go to different bred, to each there own. But prefer the black and white colors, for the black coats tend to be least adopted due to the black color. People are weird. But mine was sent to Wayside from another rescue. When I did get her, when I would get ready for work, sitting on the couch, she would hop up on the couch, be beside me, putting her head on my leg and cry, for five days straight. I kept telling her that she was home. On the fifth day, I told her that she was home to stay. She stopped the crying after that day.My condolences.
Walking is my exercise. When my dog died I knew I needed a new one, since I become that weird man walking in the neighborhood at 6:30am and 10pm. "What is he a peeping Tom?" If you have a dog, you're just the "dog walker."
I know about Wayside Waifs and KC Pet Project. My current dog came from them. They do good work. You can foster a dog, and if it has existing medical problems, you don't have to pay for the care. For example, my current dog had heart worms and was fostered through her treatment and after until she was out of the woods. That's when got her. If you get a dog from foster care, you get a better idea of it's personality and interactions. We like black dogs and pits or pit mixes, the kind of the dogs a lot of people don't want, thus we take 'em.

While she was still in the puppy stage between 1 and 2 years old, she would go to the front room, as I was sleeping and get my bic pins and chew them up. I would see the remains and cry. One day, she went under the bed, I was crying, "Are you trying to kill yourself?" But was glad when that was over. Before that, she was digging in the dirt when she was out doing her doggie toilet, when she got a hornet into her mouth and got stung. When I brought her in and looked at her face swelling up, I thought for that moment, "Did I just eat a psychedelic mushroom?" That is funny to hear it now. LMAO! But she survived and lived a long lovely life.
But I could not let her suffer in fear in not knowing what was happening to her. I will find another, perhaps when my friend and I go to Wayside Waifs, I want to donate some money in Dixie's honor to help other rescues and who knows, the place is a full of miracles.
Glad that you are one of us, a rescue yourself. I thank you too for what you have done here, explaining to people that these animals, dogs, cats, birds, what ever passes as a even a pet, companion, support, they are all special for our health as it is for theirs. You are truly blessed. Amen.

@tom in MO I have some strange news. It hit me today like a ton of bricks. Something told me to look at the Wayside Waifs website and look at the dogs, for they update daily. I saw three possibilities for me to adopt and hope to get one of them tomorrow. And then they posted another one today on facebook. I will always remember Dixie and even the one before(I had him for 24 hours) Gil, who was epileptic. I hope to have good news tomorrow. If not I will keep looking for the right rescue. Thanks for everything. Rescues are great. Hugs for today.

I hope you like the picture of my Dixie. She loved sleeping in her bed in the front room, in front of the air vent in the winter and summer. I had to download that from my cell phone. And I will be going to Wayside Waifs hopefully today. I thought I could wait a few weeks, can't. And I can go to McDonald's everyday to hang out for 1 and half hours and just walk around the Target and grocery stores before walking back to an empty house. I hope to have one home tonight.

Got a new pup Friday, I will post her picture soon. Dachshund mix, 4 years and 6 months old, has had three rounds of Heartworm treatment, now on the six month wait till I can take her to a vet for test for the all clear. We take short walks on the property drive(gravel), and she has a cold. Took her to vet and got the med for the cold. She is eating good and drinking her water. She is the lap dog. Her name is Zoey.Good luck. I hope it'll be a good fit

I've thought (and probably heard more than once) that dogs reflect the personalities of their owners. If the owners jump every time there's a knock on the door or odd sound outside, the dogs are jumpy and jittery. If the owners are more mellow. take things in stride, the dogs are, too.
We've (my wife (and for a while, my kids) and) I have had three chihuahas (reputedly jumpy, snappy, yappy dogs), a Shih Tzu, and a Terrier. They've all been mellow - but protective if they thought it was necessary. Giving them a lot of love and attention, and making it clear that we're part of their family, was natural for us, and good for the dogs. My wife and I miss them all.
Congratulations on Zoey! My dog had heartworms and she's been doing good for at least 4 years now. She had some permanent heart damage, so she's on Lasik (just like a human). She doesn't like the heat, but she's also a hedonist.

Sorry I was busy keeping my mind busy and getting used to Zoey. Found out that she is still restricted from activity for four more weeks, and then it will be 5 more months till she can be tested on whether she is heartworm free. She is a very sweet, quiet, loving, loves attention, belly rubs, lap dog. I will load up a picture to you in a few days. We are still getting to know each other. And she knows I still miss my Dixie girl. It still hurts, but the general sting is going away. I am happy with Zoey. And she is happy with me. Rescued each other.

Very sorry to hear about your dog. Some people don't get it but for dog people they are definitely a member of the family.
