Hello this is my first time . I will be going to the dr the 29 of this month and most likely he is going to set up a date for my surgery. To be honest I am very scared of the fact of going under and the surgery it self. I know there is others who might help me see the brighter side of this . I have had this condition since 96 and it is now getting to the point something is going to have to be done. Sissy

Hello Sissy,

You came to the right place. There are so many people here who know exactly what people like us are feeling and what to expect before and after the surgery.

I am looking at the same surgery as you very soon. You mention in your profile that blood is flowing back into your heart from the aortic valve, also known as aortic regurgitation. That is my condition as well. It is congenital and my surgeon suspects I have a partially bicuspid valve.

I don't know if you have gotten any second opinions but there are other options available sometimes. My surgeon gives me an 80% chance of repairing my valve rather than replacing it. Depending on your valve pathology, that could be a viable alternative.

It is always good to get as much information as possible, especially since you have a bit of time yet. You will get plenty of support here.

Good luck,
Randy

Hi Sissy-

Welcome to VR. You will find the information, love and support here very helpful, as we all have. Here's the short version - VR surgery, while major, is an event that changes most people's lives for the better. The surgery itself is over quickly and you will be unconscious for all of it. The recovery takes about 8 weeks for most; by 6 months you will be feeling better than you have for years - since '96 for sure.

I know this is brief and doesn't go into all of the details - you'll find plenty of details here - but I want you to know that VR surgery is a GOOD thing - without it your life will grow steadily worse, you will feel worse and you will eventually die. After the surgery, you will feel better, can grow stronger and do things you could maybe never do before, and you will know that you have weathered a major life storm - and that anything is possible. Go for it and don't look back - we're all here to support you; most of us have been there, and there are a lot of folks here who have been there several times!

Good luck and best wishes - don't be afraid to chime in on the forums and ask all of the questions you want.

Thanks for the information . I am glad I have found this site as I now don't feel I am alone. I really didn't think there were this many people who had heart trouble. Guess since I live in a small town has a lot to do with that. I have had trouble in the pass when I have been under had a hard time waking up . It seem I don't need as much as others to knock them out. First experiance I was out for two days for a out patent surgery.

It is amazing at how many heart patients there really are. If you think about it, you have to wonder just how many you walk past in one days time. Yes, there are that many, but most of us are a quiet lot until you put us in here. ;)

Welcome to Vr, Sissy. This is the right place to be for information and support while you are traveling toward the climb up the awesome mountain to surgery. We will stay with you all the while to help provide what you need. Scared? Yep, been there and done that - nearly all of us. Blessins.......

Scared?

Scared?

Hi Sissy

Glad you found this team. It is the best thing to do for when you are scared - log in here and "talk". As for being scared in the hospital, I had a therapist my cardiologist suggested tell me - "when you are scared you will know you are normal! " :) Take good care between now and the 29th, that's important - go in strong!

Jewel

Thank You all

Thank You all

This is great to recieve all the information on one page. I am really glad I found this site to easy the stress and the concerns of the up coming surgery. I will let you all know what I find out the 29 when I see the Doctor. I am sure he will set up the day for the surgery. I have had and seen at lease 5 heart Doctors since 96 and they all have told me the same thing it has to be fixed.
I want to think you all for the replies and I wish you all the Best in Life. :)
Thanks You
