Thank you for posting an answer to my son Kamal.
Yes, my husband is at the hospital since 18 days ago, and he has a very accentuated purple toe syndrome.
It started at about two weeks from leaving the hospital after a heart surgery for implant of metal valve (St. Jude - aortic position), and after being in treatment with Coumadin.
Firstly it was just a slighty blue-purple color in his toe nail, and then it appeared as though he was with Livedo reticularis. Both sympots increased very rapidly, until he finally was hospitalized 18 days ago, so that the doctors can treat him better.
Since the hospitalization, the coumadin has been suspended and so all the other medicines that he was taking (such as Lipitor, atenolol, Amiondarona, Norvasc and iron tablets that he also taking.)
A therapy with Enoxaparin (heparin - low molecular weight) has been started since then, but the purple allergy has only increased, and extended also to his both feet and legs, so the doctor also introduced Plavix (anti platelet aggregation drug).
It appears that the allergy has exarcerbated. So this weekend (Friday) the doctor started using cortizone, and also Balcor, since his blood pressure started to oscilate and make peak of 160/110. A sublingual medicine to bring down the blood pressure was also given.
The problem is that now with the cortizone, it appears as for moments the purpleness gets better, but yesterday, right after giving him the sublingual medicine for the blood pressure he had a very scaring reaction: his face, nose, fingers and toes went very purple, but after one hour or so, it dissappered again. When he is in "resting position" with his legs, the purpleness gets better. But in standing position goes worst.
It appears to me as though his allergical reaction to the Coumdain is being exacerbated with the use of Heparin and Plavix, and I am very much afraid about the complications taht it may bring.
Please give us your opinion on this.
Doctors here are thinking that perhaps EXANTA (ximelagatran) might be a way out this problem. But as you know, this medicine is still in trial phase and has not been approved by the FDA. We live here in Brazil, my husband is American, and we are going desperate over the situation.
Thank you very much, and thanks to all those who answered to my son Kamal.
