At last I have been given a date for my AVR and root replacement. Surgery is on 9th February with the pre op on the 1st February. I have opted for a mechanical valve but I am not sure what make of valve they use at Wythenshawe hospital. I do not feel to bad about it at the moment. My main worry is "have I made the right decision about valve choice" as I am 47 and very active. I do not want further operations if I can help it which points to mechanical but I still want to compete in races (hill, road and cross country). I know lots of people on this forum race but I am not sure they run to their maximum (or similar to before the valve replacement). Either way I need to get the valve replaced as I severe aortic stenosis and I am sure the surgeon will fit the right valve.

I am in a similar situation . I am 40 years old and going in for root and aortic valve replacement of Feb 4th. I am very active as well and decided on the mechanical valve. The reason was the same as yours, do anything to avoid further operations. All the best to a smooth operation and speedy recovery

Wishing you both a successful surgery ... I was almost 50 when I had my AVR and I chose mechanical ... I am not a runner but I do play golf and am very active with work and other activities ... I chose mechanical to try and avoid future replacements ... it take about a year to fully recover so don't get discouraged with your performance or endurance, it will come ... February will be four years since my AVR and I feel better than I have in years ... life just keeps getting better!!!

Thanks for your replies, it is quite reassuring. I know mechanical is the right choice as I have had plenty of time to look at the options but it does not stop the last minute doubts. I would have liked the surgeon to have been a bit more open about the mechanical valve he will use. I did say to myself that I would go with the surgeons decision so I think I need to trust his judgement.

Thanks
Martin

I'm 46, just had my first and only AVR due to severe aortic stenosis. I'm 3 weeks out of the hospital and feel pretty good. I had minimally invasive procedure and went with the St. Jude mechanical. In my normal state, I'm pretty much going all the time and feel like I'm pretty active. I think I made the right choice for me. I hope you're comfortable with whatever you go with. Good luck to you!

We've certainly had some very active members. Marathons & at least one triathalon competitor. Check out Active Lifestyles - you may have to go back aways (or use the search function)

I was 42 when I had my surgery. Prior to the surgery my ability to run kept getting worse and worse, that is what triggered me seeing the cardio in the first place. Pre-surgery if my heart rate got above 130 I would get SOB and chest pain. By the time I saw the cardio I couldn't do a 1/4 mile on a treadmill at 5mph. Keep in mind I'm 5'11, 200lbs and in pretty good shape.

Im coming up on 2 yrs now since surgery and in that time I've probably logged 500+ miles running including a 1/2 marathon. Granted my times aren't particularly fast but when I run now my heart rate is usually 165ish with absolutely no issues.
