Oh, geez...
One of my lovely students, a high school senior, announced to me today that she got a tattoo over the weekend. She has MVP and I asked her if she premedicated. No, she said. Is she nuts??? I called her mother and the mother was aware of the tattoo, but not that her daughter needed to premedicate before the tattoo. We talked about bacterial endocarditis and that if she has any weird symptoms to call her cardio immediately.
This happens a lot. I've heard so many horror stories about young kids getting piercings and tattoos and ending up with BE. I'm surprised this girl's cardio never warned her about the dangers of BE. Personally, I think tattoo parlors and places that do piercings should make people sign a release when they get things done like that. I don't know, I'm just worried for this girl and a bit frosted.
