I asked this question of the respiratory therapist that hangs around my house
(my husband ) and he said they don't get contaminated. You're only inhaling, not exhaling. If you think you've maxed out on the spirometer, then there's no need to keep using it. Otherwise you can keep it around for awhile longer.
I've still got mine. I pull it out and use it sometimes just to see how much better my lung volume is!
